1. What happened at London's May 10 anti-Scientology protest
3 years ago
Someone had their "cult" sign removed by police, and summonsed to court. They definitely remained at the protest, as I spoke to them during the afternoon as well.

    Madness. What are the laws there? I know they have pretty strict libel and slander laws. Do they apply to a corporation?

    He was summoned under a public order offence. That means he was probably arrested under "Chapter 166 %u2014 Offenses Against Public Order;
    Firearms and Other Weapons; Racketeering"

    That contains a great many offences.

    My understanding is that the police consider it an offence because they consider the term 'cult' is an opinion rather than a fact.

    Scientology is not a cult anymore than other extreme religions.If you can see past your ignorance you may prevail.Just because thay have strange medical beliefs does not make them a cult.All religions began as cults.

    I could just delete your comment, but I think the public good is better served by my leaving it in place - so that people can see what an apologist for a cruel, immoral and fraudulent cult looks like.

    The Merriam-Webster online dictionary lists five different definitions of the word "cult."[15]

    1. Formal religious veneration
    2. A system of religious beliefs and ritual; also: its body of adherents;
    3. A religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also: its body of adherents;
    4. A system for the cure of disease based on dogma set forth by its promulgator;
    5. Great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book).

    All five of those diffinitions can be applied to the Cult of Scientology.

    The same definitions could also be put along side other mainstream religions.Please explain.
  • [citationNeeded] 3 years ago
    Well, yes they could. Thats because, within the english language, cult is a word that can be used to describe any set of religious beleifs. It is not intrinsicially an insulting term.

    Their are other definitions for cults, which are more slanted to describe the organisations that most people think of when discribing a cult.

    One such example would be the B.I.T.E. model. Again, scientology does fit within these definitions.
    Scientology engages in Behavior Control, Information Control, Thought Control & Emotional Control. It does all of them, on many levels.

    It also falls into Older definitions, it behaves as a mystery cult, with degrees of initiation and the slow revilation of infomation over time.

    It is a cult BY EVERY definition i can find.

    Guys, in reference to this. Please will all Brits and i guess anyone else who is interested in this submit a request to Panorama, asking them to look into the connection between the City of london police and Co$.

    We know for certain that the Co$ has provided:
    -Hospitality worth £11,000 for senior officers
    -Gifts to senior officers.

    We also know that senior officers have appeared as guest speakers at scientology events and appeared in there internal propganda videos.

    We also know that City of london police are interpriting the law differently to other police forces, even in london itself. The met is not moving to charge people under section five of the Public Order Act for using the term cult.
