Test demonstrating that
1- A seemingly perfect photo (taken however using 3x telezoom and without tripod) shows its limitations
2- The process of creating a panoramic photo has clearly degraded photo quality a bit more which is shown by zooming in
3- With a high quality + 6 MB resolution photo you can play around almost as much as you like

Additional information concerning pixel size: original, after predistortion, start zoom, end zoom

1) 2816x1584 , 2816x2107 , 1920x1440 , 960x720

2) 2570x720 , 2570x960 , 960x720 , 480x360

3) 1584x2816 , 1584x3755 , 1440x1080 , 960x720

Rendered using 1280x720 special custom profile for Vimeo

Some of the comments are related to the very low quality conversion Vimeo had done the first time. They did a second run, and a third ... , and eventually the result was OK. I prefer to keep these comments for a while, because some of the things Ted wrote need maybe further discussion.

There seems to be something wrong here

Vimeo has been informed about this bug

Video plays now, but after the code conversion by Vimeo I hardly recognize it!!!
Please download the original WMV file (less than 10 MB) and play it with WMP on your PC

John, I downloaded your .wmv file and agree, Vimeo's conversion destroys the quality.

I expect the reason, they may be unable to generate an HD video from the PS3 codec associated with this specific small video file with continuous motion and excessive panning, - just a theory).

After downloading, I ran it through a couple of processes first to get the best possible HD format video using MM (MM being compatible with the PS3 codec). Secondly, I converted it to DivX in order to reduce the size without any appreciable loss.

I Expect Vimeo may now recognize this as an HD video and convert it accordingly. It still may not be perfect, but I expect much better than the original conversion ^^.

    Here are the video sizes:

    Your original (PS3 Codec) = 9.6mb
Intermediate HD .wmv (MM codec) = 160mb
Final HD .DivX = 60mb (This final step could be skipped)

For comparison purposes you can test this theory by uploading the converted HD file to Vimeo.

And it remains a PS3 video, even after this manipulation, as Vimeo is doing likewise by converting before activating.

Edit: Corrected a grammatical error and sp. caused by brain fade. ;-)

Thanks Ted for all this usefull information. It is very strange though that 2 other stories (both rendered with the same custom 1280x720 vimeo codec) have been converted the day almost without loss of quality !!!

I noticed your "Testing size in pixels ........." (video 326) ^^ didn't render to HD as did the other two video's in the links posted.

Re video 326, I calculated the file size per unit of time to be the smallest of the three. It also appears to have the greatest amount of continuous motion.

And even though video 249 plays in HD, I noticed significant studdering (or stuttering).

Just wondering about Vimeo's configuration and thresholds regarding conversion to HD.

Again this is theoretical, but to create a quality HD video, the information must be available to the converter being used and is also subject to Vimeo's configuration.

BTW, with your approval, I can temporarily upload your 326 video (converted wmv or DivX) to one of my channels and remove it after the theory has been tested. We may all learn a little from the experiment.

    EDIT:
Interesting, after I posted the last comment, I returned to the page to check a couple of things and found the video being processed again as I type this edit. I wonder if Vimeo has tweaked their converter. It'll be interesting to see the result after this second conversion has been completed.

Thanks for your concern Ted, but I made an urgent appeal to the Vimeo staff and they restarted the conversion. You can follow the countdown if you like and meanwhile I keep my fingers crossed !!!

Yeah John, I was posting the edit during the countdown. I agree the HD version plays so much better. A little hesitation initially with the audio, but once streamed the audio sorts itself out.

The original likely fell just under Vimeo's auto conversion threshold for HD. Let's hope configuration changes, if any, are permanent.

And I much enjoyed the panoramic video with the touch of classical music. Great job.

The movie worked great for me.
    Hmmmm

    I loved the bridge.
One day I'll go back there and do a documentary on that bridge. Been there many times and Budapest is one of the picturesque places in Europe. Am planning to go there in a few years from now and stay for 9 months to do lots of documentary on the countryside and maybe some in the cities as well.

How did you like the food?
I think they have the best tasting food in all of Europe :)
