Prairie canyon Ranch is an official preserved wildlife open reserve in Douglas County. Owned by Frederick Bartruff in 1867, a German immigrant who ran Prairie Canyon Ranch. A diphtheria outbreak led to the death of Frederick, leaving his wife Barbara to take care of it. Barbara married John Billmier, her neighbor and they doubled their property. Douglas County Open Space purchased the property and it is currently run as cattle ranch.
