"Some people worry that artificial intelligence will make us feel inferior, but then, anybody in his right mind should have an inferiority complex every time he looks at a flower."
- Alan C. Kay

This celebration of spring was shot with my Sony V1 using a Letus Extreme 35mm adaptor. A few shots are without the Letus. I spent quite a bit of time on the audio, so I hope you have good speakers! The music is some that I have the rights to from Digital Juice and Music2Hues. Enjoy, comments are welcome!

    I love this. :)

Could you maybe allow us to download it too? I mostly watch Vimeo videos on my HDTV via the PS3, so I would need the original file for that... Thanks.

I added your video to the HDNature channel.

Thanks for the great comments. I've changed to allow for downloads. This is for a TV show I'm doing, but what the heck, that is going to be an hour! It does look soooo much better when you download it. The sound is way better too!

Wow that was simply beautiful!! What macro lens did you use for the predation sequence?
  •
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
Actually, that was one of the shots with the stock lens on the Sony V1. It has a 20x lens, with a .5 digital extender that does not degrade the image. This is like having a 30x lens, plus it has a macro focus ability. I can't get that close with any Nikon lens that I own.

beautiful Paul and the sound adds a lot to it

Thanks Philip! Your work with the Letus actually prompted me to get one! Keep up the great work.

How the flowers at 2:50 are called?
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
Those are called Trillium. They are a wild flower. They come in Purple, white and "painted" varieties. The "Painted" ones are mostly white with a purple line down each leaf.

Nice! Very sharp videos u have! FCP LEX EX1 should be the ultimate combo i think! The last scene was awesome... really good composition!
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
That reminds me of when George Lucas asked Kirasawa why he framed his opening shot of "Kagemusha" the way he did...his response, if I panned left there was a landfill, if I panned right there was a modern skyscraper! Not quite that cut and dried but that last shot had shrubs to the left and right that would've spoiled the scene!

...See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these.

Stunningly Beautiful. What lenses do you use for your wide shots?
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
    Guyzo,

I have a Nikon 24mm F2.8 D lens. It tends to hot spot in the middle and is softer at the corners. I believe that is the way with most wide angles though. I love the depth of field you can acheive with wide angle lenses though!

    Thanks for watching!

Truly beautiful, love the close up of the ice melting and the dissolve to the wide shot of river.
Exceptionally good editing and music composition. The music is perfect and has a nice calm tranquil atmosphere which goes with the footage.

Amazing how beautiful nature can be presented that way. Great videoart and soundtrack: mindblowing.
Stunning timelapse at the end (just one framejump).
This could turn out to be an example for many of us :)
  • Paul Frederick 2 years ago
Thanks and very observant about the frame jump. Any guess what caused it? :) During the shot I realized I had Steadyshot on, didn't think it would matter since it was a locked off shot, WRONG! When the ultra high contrast sun went behind the dark trees, it triggered a jump in the image stabilization. When I sped it up is when I realized it, the shot was too cool to not use though! Now, I try and make SURE it is turned off before using it on a tripod.
  • Pierre 2 years ago
It will always be a warm cool shot. It didn't bother me, just saw it :) and nobody is perfect ...
Thnx for the info, learned a lot.

    I love your works.
I downloaded your "Winter Solstice" and repeat watching it over and over.
This piece is again, so beautiful, but honestly I am surprised and disappointed to find ugly interlace lines in your fine work.
You say that this piece is for a TV show, so you did not bother de-interlacing it?
    It's a shame.
I hope that you de-interlace your next video, which will be another beautiful piece, I am sure, before uploading it at Vimeo.
I am looking forward to see it.
  • Paul Frederick 1 year ago
To be honest, I did a de-interlace pass but once I uploaded I see that for whatever reason it didn't take. It will be interlaced for TV, not everything should be de-interlaced for broadcast! It was shot interlaced for this reason.

    Gorgeous!
I also use a V1 and I've just ordered a Letus Extreme, after months of watching fantastic examples such as yours.
How did you achieve the timelapse sequence at the end? Was it shot at normal speed and quickened in the NLE, or did you use the interval recorder in the V1?

    Thanks,

    Andy Mac

I shot it for about 20 minutes and sped it up to 3000 percent in post. Thanks for the nice comments!

I hope to do another one soon.

Absolutely gorgeous, beautiful composition, the sound work was wonderful and the pace and progression of the season change felt natural. Very well composed, I can respect the amount of work that must have gone into this.
