At 16 years old, Yessenia Vazquez made the journey from Guatemala to the US to escape a life of poverty and abuse. Her trip was dangerous, a young woman alone, hopping trains, crossing the desert, and depending on the kindness of strangers to survive. After three months, she finally crossed the border into El Paso, Texas. She was detained by the Border Patrol and spent ten months in a detention center in El Paso. She was eventually released and allowed to stay with a sponsor, a group of nuns from the Sisters of Charity in Cincinnati. The sister run a not for profit clinic, Clinica Guadalupana that caters to the need of one of the poorest sections of El Paso, Texas. Yessenia grew up under the care of the nuns and flourished in the clinic. Her experiences in Guatemala, and the need she saw in the El Paso community pushed her to practice medicine. She is now a US citizens and working as a medical assistant in the clinic. Yessenia will be returning to school soon to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
