A Period French Renaissance, Hand Carved Coffre (Trunk) from Normandy with Front Opening – One Key (to front lock) – European Oak -Very Good Antique Condition Commensurate with Age – Body is 16th C. – Top is 1900’s
From Normandy, this magnificent large 16th C. French hand-carved trunk has a scene on the front panel of Roman maidens dancing in a garden with foliage and flowers, typical of the period. Period motifs frame this panel which opens downward with its key. Turned and fluted pilasters flank the panel as well as other period motifs of gadrooned, stylized coins and fleuron, pinnae, and bandwork. The sides of the trunk feature more bandwork and fretwork in undulating heights. At its corners are caryatides upholding fruit in stylized acanthus vegetation and resting upon a base of volutes and mascarons. The base or lower pediment has motifs of stylized florets and medallions and the four feet are block.
This Period, French Renaissance Coffre is rare and will not disappoint the discerning collector of French Coffres.
