I'm a recent PC convert who waited patiently while Apple worked out the kinks with their latest iMac release of the 27" Intel powered 2.8ghz quad core i7 iMac. It's a thing of beauty and I wanted to relay my experience of getting my new machine. I shot this on my Canon 7D and edited it(yes, poorly, but I'm still learning this editor, damn it.) on Final Cut Pro.

    nice :) i have similar iMac .. 2TB 8GB ..
I was disappointed to see how FCP works with 4 cores and 8GB
    it doesn't :(

Really? What are the issues with it? I don't have any prior experience with FCP. To me, it seems to work fine.
  • mr.ezrider 1 year ago
it doesn't use more than 2.5GB or RAM, and doesn't know what to do with 4 cores that i7 has .. i work .. but it could be much faster if programmed better . i think :)

So what you're are saying is that the machine is too much power for final cut pro? It would be just as fast say with an i3 and like 4 gigs of ram? Just wondering because I want to run fcp and am thinking of getting the that model.

Hi Joseph. FCP, right now, doesn't make use of the extra cores and the extra ram. But you might be disappointed if you were to buy a lesser machine only to find that the new version of FCP does support 64bit processing, etc. Evidently, Adobe Premier CS5 is a 64bit app that is really fast on the faster machines. So, once Apple gets on board you'll be glad you have the extra horsepower. BTW, having more ram might not apply directly to FCP, but if you only have 4gb of ram, then you know that FCP isn't able to use the full 4gb because the OS and any other application that's open while you're running FCP will be leaching some of that ram, too.

I found this randomly through a Google search while being bored at work, and I was laughing my ass off. Great video!

I shoot photos/video on Canon 5D Mark II and am currently pondering whether to stick with PC/Adobe CS5/Cineform Neoscene or to go the iMac route. I think I'd stick with Adobe either way. How has your iMac been working for you?
  • BrewBeau plus 1 year ago
Hey, thanks! The Mac has been working great. I was using Sony Vegas(using Cineform Neoscene) before I switched over to Final Cut. I was a little wary of the switch just from the standpoint of learning new software. But it really didn't take long to figure it out. I'm no master at it, but I'm as comfortable on FCP now as I was on Vegas. Most of the terms between different NLE's are pretty much the same. That helps.

Sweet! Yeah, I learned in film school on Avid, but I think I'll be sticking with Adobe Premiere Pro, as that is now no less capable of everything than Final Cut. Though I really do like Color with Final Cut....

In any case...great to hear it works well. I'm still torn between creating an uber powerful PC for half the price or going with a Mac that I can't customize!
  • BrewBeau plus 1 year ago
Yeah, I wrestled with that, too. I built my last two PCs and it was cheap. Though, the plus side to Mac being on a small scale of available hardware is that it works well together and there's a lot of support on forums because just about everyone has the same hardware.
