  • Wow, some really amazing stuff here. Love all the animals!

    Now I wish I hadn't downgraded to a 7D :(
  • J.Corte 1 year ago
iS there such a big difference in look between the 2 camera's?
  • Yep, there is definitely a noticeable difference, especially in low light. Noise levels are much higher on the 7D.
  • Martin Haasdijk 1 year ago
not enough to be noticed, i still believe the 7d is better because of the variety of different frame rates like 60/50p witch the 5dmii lacks
  • Very true. That's the one thing I would miss from the 7D. But for professional work, 720 isn't high enough resolution a lot of the time.
  • Martin Haasdijk 1 year ago
Yeah thats true, but lets be honest. i think for the most part you don't need to have 1080p because your not gonna show it on a big screen anyway. still hope that canon releases a 1080p 60p firmware but i don't know if it's possible yet
  • Well i think the biggest factor is The Full Frame sensor on the 5d compared to the 7d's crop factor. The 5d sensor is slightly larger then 35mm where it can be actually compared to 35mm VistaVision. Iam a huge supporter of film still but i recently learned this comparison to the 5d and you really cant go wrong with the budget.... Iam not putting down the 7d in anyway for i have seen some real beautiful images come from it on this site.

This is awesome Phil! Can I ask how you exported it or got it cropped like this?
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
i exported out of quicktime pro 7 as 1920x817 maintain aspect ratio by cropping
  • Daniel Steinberg 1 year ago
Amazing footage! You really know how to pick your shots.

On a technical note. I noticed that there is a white line on the bottom of the video and your Monarchs: Miles Away video. This is due to you cropping to 1920x817. For most video encoding you want to use a mod16 resolution. So you would want to use 1920x816. This is only 0.125% off a perfect 2:35:1 ratio. If anything use only even numbers.

Quicktime's decoder seems to ignore this error, but most decoders do not. You want to use a resolution divisible by 16 to maintain compatible decoding and compression efficiency. Vimeo reports the file as 1920x818, so it added one more pixel, which ended up as a white line. Interestingly, 1920x1080 isn't mod16, but decoders are built to deal with this.

The ranch is so epic but you still manage to show it all through the screen. Now doubt all due to an amazing camera assistant!

Such an incredible experience and now I have a video to remember it by!

It's great to see that the Kessler motor will work for timelapse. I receive my pocket jib and pocket dolly next week. Hopefully, the motor fits the pocket dolly - and the pocket dolly budget. ;)

Gorgeous... gorgeous. I once lived "over the hill" just north of The Bulltail Ranch. That was Skywalker Ranch's name before George bought it and made it home to Industrial Light and Magic. Phil - your video made me homesick for that place. Marin County IS that beautiful. Capturing that incredible beauty for all to enjoy - that is something else - what chops!

Now with 24p we can compare in the same conditions the 5D Mk II and 7D. Always people used say: "Both are the same, but you can see less noise on the shadows with the 5D MkII". But is not just this !! The difference further. It is in the resolution of the images, the range and quality of the color, the contrast, the DOP, the kind of the bokeh, not yellow cast in the skin tones and more.
Without doubt the 5D MKII got the kingdom again !!
    Great work Phillip!!

Yeah Philip, this images blew my mind.
Can I ask you if the zooms that you do are made in editing or you do it on lenses, or in the camera. (supposing that the time lapses are made with pictures and not in video mode, is that right?).

Ps: loved the shots by the threes with very wide angle, very nice.

Thanks, and man, your work is great!

Mr Bloom my question is, could you get the same result in the look and feel of the movie if you would have shot it with the Canon 7D.

    Thank you..
  • Jonathan Farber 1 year ago
7D is not full frame but my guess is you will get a great result with that unit. Bear in mind that you you might not achieve the same wide angle and lens clarity with EF-S lenses.

I am Currently umming and arrring about going for a 7D to replace my 5dMK1. my 5dMK2 is simply amazing..!

First of all I give an academy award to Mr. Bloom, I think so. Philip Bloom is King of the film look for video for the internet. Mr. Bloom came and many 35mm adaptor company they become known fast. New companys addition to new adaptors invented result of Mr. Bloom and pull on 35mm adapter. This with many companys they maked money. If you do not believe you do research. Allow explanation in my comments here for Mr. Bloom a modest fellow. Without Mr. Bloom we still have PS Teknik $50,000 adaptor for Betacam SP ONLY. He made first that shallow depth of field in DV and now everybody also their Moms and squirrels copy him do it. He made first that nature viddy with depth of field very shallow so very shallow like with depth of single hair from one small girl tiny head and today every body who is nobody they copy him with thousand nature videos here. But they are not spot on. They ask him his kits information and they buy and they copy him. And he tell them he share everything and let you download everything, but Philip Bloom was the first. Now, legacy of Mr. Bloom is worldwide movement in Wide World Web when somebody call somebody video "Bloomesque". This is new class with filmmaking for web for DV and now, for HD video 1920x1080 24p H.264 native quality top of the line. My partners all welcome to The Bloom Revolution. So now, everybody they say Sorry my video is not for downlaod which mean "My Bloomesque video is not for download because I do no like this giving away my "secrets". When Mr. Bloom say here download my video and learn children. Learn the way of The Bloom and rememebr there is only one Bloom. When other people tell us you can not do Philip Bloom tell us Yes you can do watch me and do what I do. Do you know how many beginning filmmaker there is at how many forum around this world and they say Philip Bloom showed me or I saw Philip Bloom do or I am follow Philip Bloom Method (c). Do you know when Sir Philip upload Vimeo viddy higher than 120 new people per hour watch this things? Every minute 2 people watch Philip Bloom video!? That mean this every 30 second 1 people watch The Bloom Art!? Philip Bloom Philip Bloom hooray! And companys must be caution many times one new camera has victory maybe failure results from Mr. Bloom review. He has power and what he is says is what filmmaking worldwide this population they trust in Wide World Web and listen. We like him. We can talk with Mr. Bloom and call him Philip and he is not like "don't call me Philip, I am inventor of film look" or like better than you and I celebrity. He is a regular guy who is funny and he travels all the world to make films for us risking arrest many many times everything so we can enjoy and love all these movies. It is this great wonder how they have not arrested him to this time. Thank you Mr. Bloom you are this wonderful single man with two cats in a sad world. I think I speak for everybody on the internet. Greetings and good trip!

Hi Philip. This is really breathtaking work. I'm looking to get into doing DSLR video and am looking for a camera (The 5D Mk2 image vs the 7Ds variable frame rate is my debate of course.) The link you have doesn't seem to be working.. It gets the msg "The page you've requested couldn't be found". I'd love to know the workflow details... lenses, cropping, etc.

I get this amazing feeling in my stumach watching these skywalker ranch videos. They have a feeling of perfectness which I would love to achieve one day.

Reminds me a bit of the beauty of the BBC documentary series "Planet Earth" and "Wild China". (I haven't seen the rest, that's probably the only reason why I don't mention them.)

Thank you mr. Bloom for being an inspiration to so many.

PS: I hope I can be at the DSLR meet up in Amsterdam next week. Cause dude, you're awesome.
