LAND feature documentary - Wide theatrical release in Canada this summer, 2010!!
*Official Selection HotDocs 2010*

LAND is a true Wild West story, delving in to the tumultuous topic of land ownership and development in politically volatile Nicaragua. The year is 2006, where Nicaragua is viewed as the new land of opportunity. Newspapers and magazines hail it as The New Cancun, The Next Florida. Fred, Sean and Keith, three naive Americans wide-eyed at the prospects of finally making it big, set up shop and start constructing resorts for tourists’ next discount tropical vacation. What these inexperienced developers don't know is that the seemingly inexhaustible cheap manual labour is about to run out. The natives are restless and starting to see through this new form of imperialism. When former revolutionary leader Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas sweep back to power, legitimately or otherwise, not one of our Gringos is left unscathed. Dreams of plane loads of vacationers and pool-side margaritas give way to death threats and armed assaults. In a story of tourism vs. terrorism, one is never quite sure who has the upper hand nor if anyone is telling the honest truth.

Looks amazing and sad and true. Strange that this wasn't made about the land boom in Costa Rica 15-20 years ago. Look forward to seeing the film!! Good luck at Cannes!

Survivor is doing their new season down in San Jaun del Sur. We can all watch the fall season on TV in a few weeks. It's now 2010 and I own a house about an hour north of San Juan del Sur. I rent it out to tourist and go down when I can. It is truly paradise. The ranch I own my home in built a clinic in the local village. One of the surf camps down in my area donates money to families who want to send their kids to school. You can send a kid to school for $25 a year. The locals on the remote pacific coast are happy to have a job working the tourist industry or construction business since there is noting else to do for a living down there other than substance farming. My concern is President Ortega who is attempting a silent coup. Tourism is a big part of a modern economy. If the tourism dies, so does a major source of income and opportunity for the country.
