Between 2007 and 2009 I made several attempts to film a documentary about a boarding school in northern Iran. This is a 30-minute rough-cut excerpt from my second attempt. I filmed all the material in this piece in January, 2009, in the villages of Pul and Churan in Mazandaran province, nestled in the Alborz mountains between Tehran and the Caspian Sea.
Filming on this project was cut short in June, 2009, when, in the wake of the Iranian elections, I was detained along with my Iranian translator and sound recordist, Mohsen Farschi, who was badly beaten in the Interior Ministry building in Tehran. I was forced to leave the country shortly thereafter. Mohsen also left Iran after receiving threatening phone calls from Iranian officials. For the time being, this project is on indefinite hold.
This material is filmed with a Panasonic HPX170 camera and a Neumann KMR81i shotgun mic, and additional stereo sound was captured using a Crown SASS MKII microphone connected to a Sound Devices 702T recorder.
