On 13 may a fire destroyed the entire architecture building on the campus of Delft University.
The official reading is that a leaking water pipe caused a short which caused a fire. The sprinklers had been turned off in order to repair the water pipe. Later they said that the building was old and was not even worth it to place sprinklers.
The fire rapidly destroyed the upper half of the south wing of the building, making the building unstable. That caused the fire fighters to retreat entirely from the building, after which the fire slowly ate away the north wing. The north wing finally collapsed, causing the fire to reach the ground and eating the remains of the south wing.
This video shows the spreading of the fire up to (but not including, I had no more tape left...) the point of collapse.

  • w.pasman 4 months ago

    Woah! Was this Delft Campus?
Guess now they got a sound project for students to start architectural design for the new structure replacing that.
    Did it collapse?
  • w.pasman 4 months ago
Yes at Delft. I doubt whether architecture department is going to design any campus building, as far as I know they never did.

And yes it partially collapsed. A quarter of the north wing (the north and front half of it) collapsed, starting at the 10th floor, the floor below it withstood the impact of that first floor but the two above it that followed with it crushed that part. That collapse brought the fire down from the 7th floor down to ground floor after which lower half of the building also burned out.

Needless to say, building collapsing like this reminds me of 9/11 which brings back some scary moments. Good thing nobody was injured in this one. I hope.

Nobody got hurt, everyone got out in time.

glad no one got hurt. in the US, i think it's mandatory to have sprinklers in every building no matter what.

    nice video...

In the Netherlands old buildings have special fire requirements, apparently less strict than the newer ones. The requirement that people can leave the building in time was met.
