69. The Misplaced Oligopoly of Curated Time
2 months ago
This entire process took weeks. I remember specific days of cutting for 20 hours straight and only taking maybe three bathroom breaks.

For this timelapse, I had my camera take a picture every couple minutes most of the time since the span of time was a ridiculous amount of hours. Unfortunately, I lost all the other photographs when my computer decided to delete stuff. There are also gaps because my battery kept dying. What you see are 6 panels out of 15. (This was for a final project for one of my classes.)

To see what the finished panels look like or to buy one so that I can afford two more years of grad school, visit:

karenabad.tumblr.com/post/34915881

Thank you so much to the people that have bought one. I owe you my academic career.

    Wow. So much work!

Although the music is a little bouncy (which I think is perfect for this), I had to add this to "The Epic Channel for Battlin' Folks" because of the sheer amount of time and effort put into those panels.

Now, as your life coach, I must recommend taking the weekend off to sleep. I mean, with the 100F weather, all you will want to do is stay inside, anyway, right?
  • Ben Millett 2 months ago
Dibs on the one with skeletons underground. I'm emailing you about that.
  • You're my favourite life coach!

Psh it was an epic battle that consisted of me getting a bunch of blisters and cuts. I've been going strong trying to rewrite all those documents I lost...this weekend is BAY TO BREAKERS!!! ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bay_to_Breakers ) Woop woop.

I know today I had donut seeds for breakfast then later on in the day i got a migraine and got so dizzy and literally started seeing static and sparkles and weird abstract silver coloured things against a black background....then I realized it was time to lay down for a little bit. I also realized later that before the donut seeds, I hadn't eaten anything in over a day. Summer time brings healthy living...school brings death and destruction.

P.S. I'm glad the skeletons are finding a good home with you. <3 Thank you friend

  • You are a sweetie gem shark.
You're getting my second favourite one... (I'm secretly glad it's going to a really good home)

I can't wait to hang out with yoooouuuuu!!!

haha you and your thousand dollar video titles.

it'd be so much more fun with a friend.

oh yeah, uh the panels are AMAZING.

Xacto vs. scissors? I like how we both could basically perform surgery with our tool of choice.
  • It takes equally as much time to come up with the titles as it was to make, shoot, edit, and upload this video. Hahaha. UGH where were you. Why weren't you with me? I hope you know that this is all juvenile practice for when we make our epic masterpiece. Did you see the one on the rooftops? That was an ode to you my dearest love.

oh my god, karen. oh my god. this is the most amazing thing to watch. the amount of work you put into these things is incredible. my jaw dropped while watching this. so amazing!
  • Aww thanks Loona! But even bigger thanks for adopting one of my pieces :-) You are pretty amazing yourself! :-) Shoot to the moon!!!

Oh man that ship still blows me away.
    That'll show them.
Way to get a good run out of that wallpaper fabric, too!

  • That garneu fabric is forever. I need to buy different ones so that I don't keep playing that one out.

That pirate ship blows my mind and it takes a lot to blow me.
    HAHA

    I mean.

Booyeah. Let's ride on it and see what happens.

The sad part is if it touches water, it will die.

    Dumb paper.

    haha

Wow, that's really cool to watch, the panels came out fantastic!
  • Thanks a lot Mr. Taylor. Now it's fun to watch this, but at the time, not so fun to make. haha. Colours are fabulous!!!!! I wish my life was as bright as these panels.

Wow thats a ton of work, You cut for 20 hours a day. are you part machine ..hehe

    great job Karen
  • Brian, I am part machine. (think about it, I have time to 1) have somewhat of a social life. 2) be on vimeo all the time. 3) make a ton of videos 4) spend ample time flying kites and riding bikes 5) be a full time student. 6) help out on film shoots.)

Hahaha. Having a bad case of insomnia helps in getting a million things done. I think it's such a silly thing I've done because the medium of construction paper is so juvenile yet beautiful in its own regard. snip snip snip! Thanks so much for the kind words.

hehehe, you sure have patience ;-)
  • Actually I'm entirely surprised I stuck it out. The assignment was for 15 of them and I was overly excited, but after spending 2 or so weeks on the first 4 I immediately realized that "I've made a huge mistake." I was mostly scared that the quantity would make the quality suffer, so I found myself overcompensating for the ones towards the end.

I'm just glad that portion of my life is over. haha.

That was fun to watch. I got distracted by what you were cutting on, "Is that a fact? Opinion or fact?" Haha, at any rate, great job!
  • Hahha. It's my brother's 5th grade english book. I don't have anything hard that I can cut on that won't get ruined so what I do is I cut on top of that book so I don't scratch the table...but when I cut too much of it I rip the cut pages out and start on new ones. It was actually nice to see my progress within that book because when I started the book had hundreds of pages, but now it got shaved down to a mere few dozen. I was actually thinking that too when I played this back for the first time... "what the hell is that that I'm cutting on?" because I never actually looked at any of the pages until now. haha.

    Oh... my... amazing.

I have to have one of these!! I love the little computer break in the middle :)

Okay - I hope you're charging a lot for these - cause they are awesome. I can't decide which one I want... are there any left?
  • Haha we were playing monopoly on Joe's computer. Psh you're incredible. snip snip snip.

At first I didn't know how much to charge, but I think it's a pretty good price. If you hammer out the time i spent making them it falls in between 50cents to about $2 an hour of work. not including paper costs hahah

All of them are pretty reasonable except the pirate ship one, but apparently not ridiculous enough for someone to actually buy.

    Paper is a beautiful think.

and Thank you for for adopting one of these pieces, you will make the perfect father.

Thank you for your constant support and friendship. :-)

wow. you are such an inspiration to me! you are so creative and super-f*ing hardworking! just look at that room! :) full of creativity and work-sweat and brain pieces (i can see them flying through the air like invisible particles). everything you do is so beautiful, just like your soul and your sunshine smile :D

ps- i love glue sticks. and i really like this song. and the dinosaurs on your shirt.
  • Haha my room was in such disarray after this. The floor had so many bits..had..i mean..still has so much paper everywhere. I love my room. I spend so much time in it creating and making things. I have so much junk too. haha.

You are sooo soo soo sweet and wonderful. :-)

Thanks for all that you are and your constant glow and encouragement to me. Also thank you so much for providing a home for one of my panels, they and I are greatly appreciative.

it makes me happy that someone else shares my love for construction paper. awesome job!
  • This unhealthy obsession with creating things out of paper. haha. :-) It makes me happy that you love it as well..you should make some more animations when time permits :-)
  •

That was awesome. Energizer Karen!!!! With that much cutting with an Xacto knife , I would have at minimum lost 1 digit off a 2 fingers.
  • Thanks so much Macro King. Let me tell you....blood was definitely shed at points..thankfully not on my cute colourful papers. Snip snip snip. Xactos are way better to work with than scissors, though more dangerous. Thanks for adding me to your awesome channel! :-)

Ohh, Karen. You're always inspiring me. Can I come be your bff & change my name to 'Jamie Shrew Loves Elephants.' ? PLEASE?!
  • Psh I would gladly be your bff....on the condition that lmn writes some screenplays for me to film starring you and your little friends. Haha.

If we were bffs the world would implode with the cuteness of our paper cut outs.

    And elephants are insanely cute...!

pretty much the most fantastic show of dedication to paper cutting for the sake of a project I have ever seen or heard of. Glad you documented it.
  • It was kind of ridiculous...but worth it I guess. Now I made some money to cover my summer class. :-)

wow i really appreciated this! i remember one time watching my old roomie nearly cut his thumb off with an exact-o. no, seriously.
  • Eeeekkkk
Yeah I cut myself a couple times while working on this. The worst ones are from the paper more than the knife I feel.

    boooo

    thanks jacob.

This is a most inspiring piece. What a wonderful video as well as the panels themselves!
Your creativity shines through (as usual).

    Thank you for sharing it.
Only problem is now I feel lazy :-)
  • Aw thanks Mike. I feel lazy now that I've made them and have nothing else to do. haha just kidding. They were a burden but I'm glad they are done. Thank you for checking this out.

    It's summer! There's no room for laziness! Just fun activity..bike riding...kite flying..picnics...swimmings...!! <3

    Take care sir!

Very nice. But what I really want to know is, what kind of person is Bob Lemmons? (2:25)
  • He's vivacious and full of life. He wants to take full advantage of the similarity of his last name to the word "Lemons" by opening up a free for all Lemonade Stand during the summers.

    :-)

    Hhaha

    thanks Steve.

I'm simply astounded. The amount of effort you put into those is incredible.... but so is the result.

So, what kind of grade did you receive?
  • Thankfully I received an A...even though I turned it in 3 days late. I rather turn it in late and get points marked down rather than half ass it and turn it in on time, especially since I had worked so hard on them already.

    Thanks so much Russell!

Thanks for posting this video. I never realized how much time and effort goes into creating your animations. It really makes me appreciate it and love it that much more.
  • Aww thanks. Yeah they are truly a method of madness. When you spend 3-5 hours making one thing like a tree or a bike or something. I feel like it's become increasingly important to craft something that looks somewhat more realistic in order to justify seriousness in a medium so juvenile Thanks for your constant support Jake :-)
