I was invited to create animation for the overture to the opera Werther by Massenet based on The Sorrows of Werther by Goethe. It was a challenge to make something work at the scale of the Metropolitan Opera House and have the feeling of grief implied that was asked for. Wendall Harrington was a brilliant video designer and with Manuel Barenboim working with me we were able to solve all the issues. The result was stunning and the music was sublime. It was a thrill to see drawn animation come alive integrated into the stage performance. The opera was directed by Richard Eyre and the tenor Jonas Kaufman with the mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch made the event spectacular. The sets were by Rob Howell.
