Diego Stocco - Music From A Bonsai
I always liked bonsai trees, and I was curious to try the approach I used for "Music from a Tree" on a smaller scale, so I bought a bonsai and recorded this little experimental piece.
To determine the key I used the lowest note I could play and recorded the rest around it.
Besides playing the leaves, I used bows of different sizes, a piano hammer and a paint brush.
As far as microphones I used my Røde NT6, a customized stethoscope and tiny MEAS piezo transducers.
I played all the sounds and rhythms only with the bonsai, I didn't use any synthesizer or samplers to create or modify the sounds. I hope you'll like it.

I usually check if the technical aspects are going to be working as I'm thinking, but the performance part is always improvised. The piece comes together as I'm layering track after track.
And that with the bonsai looks violent, u know? It was my feeling.
I wait for Music from Vegetables!! =0]
The regular size tree allowed me much more flexibility in terms of sounds and musical interaction. Anyway, I wasn't try to replicate my previous work, that's just what I felt I wanted to play with the bonsai that day : )
As far as the perception of me being violent with it, don't worry at all, the perception of the force I'm actually using is totally altered by the sounds you hear.
I'm always trying to improve that aspect, I don't really have any formal training in filming. Hopefully the next one will look better! : )
Peace.

"Great idea! But I can imagine this poor bush's feelings. It must be so mad on you, because of this disturbance."
Nice work

Ok, let's try to sort this thing out : )
1. I read, and it's been confirmed to me by a botanist, that movement stimulates root growth and circulation of fluids inside the tree. I quickly looked for an article, here' something: bit.ly/dwXb0i
Feel free to look for more articles or check with an expert.
2. As I said in a previous comment: the perception of the force I'm actually using is totally altered by the sounds you hear.
It looks like I'm being violent, but I can tell you that during a windy or rainy day the bonsai is hit way harder, but still, that doesn't kill it! Trees are strong.
3. My bonsai is still well alive, enjoying his share of sun and water everyday : )

Interesting that the sound is what created the impression of force. When you think about it that makes sense as sound plays on emotions. I just had a walk outside, i live in the city and there was some biker's gettogether. The howling of their motors was truly terrifying. When the lights turned green I was petrified to cross the street even though my eyes perceived none of them was moving. There was no danger whatsoever yet I was shaking. It felt heroic to cross over.....
I know what you mean about the noise, if you think about it, we can't hold it in our hands as a material and we don't even see it, yet it can be so strong and have a major impact on us.
If Mr. Miyagi was with us, he would be mad at you playing music on a bonsai! ;-)
Really inventive...
Keep on!
btw...is the tree still alive?
either way it was super cool..
would like to know more about your customized stethoscope!? sound like an interesting way to record stuff!!
cheers!

I servizi su Wired e TG3 ti hanno fatto conoscere un pò di più qui in "madrepatria!"
Complimenti per la creatività!
yeah, i think the bonsai tree kind of likes the attention! ;o)
Genius Diego...BRAVO ;)
do you first sample all the sounds and then sequence them "offline" or is it all "live looped" or a mix of the two?
There's no sampling or looping involved.
It's a simple multi-track recording, each element is played from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
thanks for fast reply ;)
did you customize the stethoscope yourself or can you buy these somewhere (in a standard size that fit røde mics) ?
