13. Diego Stocco - Music From A Bonsai
I always liked bonsai trees, and I was curious to try the approach I used for "Music from a Tree" on a smaller scale, so I bought a bonsai and recorded this little experimental piece.

To determine the key I used the lowest note I could play and recorded the rest around it.
Besides playing the leaves, I used bows of different sizes, a piano hammer and a paint brush.
As far as microphones I used my Røde NT6, a customized stethoscope and tiny MEAS piezo transducers.

I played all the sounds and rhythms only with the bonsai, I didn't use any synthesizer or samplers to create or modify the sounds. I hope you'll like it.

That was ... sick and cool at the same time. Amazing and creative work, yet I don't feel comfortable about the tree!

Some of these sounds are amazing. How much do you experiment first before you start recording?
  • Diego Stocco plus 1 year ago
    Hey, thanks Blake.
I usually check if the technical aspects are going to be working as I'm thinking, but the performance part is always improvised. The piece comes together as I'm layering track after track.

  • Marcelo Reis plus 1 year ago
I prefer the "from a tree", the music is more elaborate. It's in my LIKES.

And that with the bonsai looks violent, u know? It was my feeling.

I wait for Music from Vegetables!! =0]
  • Diego Stocco plus 1 year ago
    Hey Marcelo, thanks.
The regular size tree allowed me much more flexibility in terms of sounds and musical interaction. Anyway, I wasn't try to replicate my previous work, that's just what I felt I wanted to play with the bonsai that day : )

As far as the perception of me being violent with it, don't worry at all, the perception of the force I'm actually using is totally altered by the sounds you hear.
  • Marcelo Reis plus 1 year ago
I understand the sounds. I tried to say that visually looks hard. (sorry my bad english)
  • Diego Stocco plus 1 year ago
    No problem man.
I'm always trying to improve that aspect, I don't really have any formal training in filming. Hopefully the next one will look better! : )

Nice music, but why are you doing to this poor bonzai ? :-)
  •
  • Diego Stocco plus 1 year ago
    Thanks guys!
Ok, let's try to sort this thing out : )

    1. I read, and it's been confirmed to me by a botanist, that movement stimulates root growth and circulation of fluids inside the tree. I quickly looked for an article, here' something: bit.ly/dwXb0i
Feel free to look for more articles or check with an expert.

    2. As I said in a previous comment: the perception of the force I'm actually using is totally altered by the sounds you hear.
It looks like I'm being violent, but I can tell you that during a windy or rainy day the bonsai is hit way harder, but still, that doesn't kill it! Trees are strong.

    3. My bonsai is still well alive, enjoying his share of sun and water everyday : )

the sound of the leaf was a revelation.
Interesting that the sound is what created the impression of force. When you think about it that makes sense as sound plays on emotions. I just had a walk outside, i live in the city and there was some biker's gettogether. The howling of their motors was truly terrifying. When the lights turned green I was petrified to cross the street even though my eyes perceived none of them was moving. There was no danger whatsoever yet I was shaking. It felt heroic to cross over.....
  • Diego Stocco plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Inge.
I know what you mean about the noise, if you think about it, we can't hold it in our hands as a material and we don't even see it, yet it can be so strong and have a major impact on us.

  • Lefteris Mantikos 1 year ago
Hahaha.. great idea there and an amazing result Mr. Stocco! Sounds are everywhere around. You just have to pay a liiitle more attention. This is a way to make, everyday, a new song in your life.
If Mr. Miyagi was with us, he would be mad at you playing music on a bonsai! ;-)

Incredibly inventive and adorable. I'm a great fan of bonsai trees and trees in general and have wanted to explore such creativity with DIY music for some time. Goes to show you don't need anything terribly fancy to create something worth watching and listening to. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

Sweet, simply sweet. Can't get enough of people's creativity. Play a tomato . . . now there's a challenge in simplicity. I just know that your Bonsai is better from the music and attention. Keep breathing and keep the music coming.

  • Nice work! Reminds me of ColdCut's Timber and FrogJam. Have you come across the Vienna Vegetable Orchestra? Everything has sounds, no? We just have to set them free! (you might be interested in my Journeys Through Vegetables at vimeo.com/12137159 )

    nice! a question:

do you first sample all the sounds and then sequence them "offline" or is it all "live looped" or a mix of the two?
  • Diego Stocco plus 11 months ago
    Thanks Renato!

There's no sampling or looping involved.
It's a simple multi-track recording, each element is played from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
  • renato budinich 11 months ago
ah ok, so you start recording a track and once you've recorded a couple of minutes you go back and start recording another one on top of it and so on?

    thanks for fast reply ;)
