The 301 Henry Street greenhouse will reinforce the Settlement’s service to its beneficiaries in the Lower East Side of Manhattan through hyper-local food production, job-training and education. With sustainability as the cornerstone of the project, the hydroponic greenhouse will provide healthy, locally-produced vegetables to the organization’s meal services, expand educational components of youth programs through hands-on learning tools, and equip community members with job skills in the emerging field of urban agriculture. Upon the project’s completion, the retrofitted rooftop will include a greenhouse structure that can produce approximately 1,310 leafy-green plants a month, a child-friendly outdoor patio to inspire creativity and learning, and a flex-space that serves as a classroom and storage room. Many sites throughout New York City are installing hydroponic greenhouses for either food production or for educational purposes – Henry Street Settlement’s unique vision aims to combine these goals: providing both the tangible benefits of food production and enhancing the organization’s exploratory learning and job-training opportunities.
