17th Century Italian Cassone Made of Walnut Wood
1 year ago
A Rare, Antique Italian Marriage Cassone from the Late 1600’s- European Walnut Wood – Good Antique Condition with superb Patina – Rubs to wood commensurate with age – 17th C.
This rare and magnificent Italian marriage Cassone from the late 1600’s has central ornamentation of a family Coat of Arms with initials “D S” atop and to either side of an incised anvil and hammer. Upon marriage, the wife’s initial was added to the husband’s family coat of arms. To either side is deeply hand carved ornamentation of wide flutes with a central floret motif surrounded by stylized, gadrooned moldings of leaves. Beneath this are gadrooned inverted motifs with stylized leaves rising from the bottom of each. At the center is a cartouche of c-scrolls and a floret. The body rests upon two deeply carved and extending paw feet to the front and two stylized, blocked, paw feet to the back.
The patination on the European walnut wood is superb—the depth to the shine cannot be emphasized enough. The deep and exquisite hand carving has been deftly rendered by the ebenist. This rare, early 17th C. Italian marriage Cassone would be an excellent addition to a collector of fine Italian antiques.
