See all Show me
An indulgently lengthed video record of one of the best days in my life. Kay and I took a day trip flying from Bristol in the UK to Norway to watch Killer whales, or orcas as they should more properly be called. The whole experience was stunning; from the -20 degree temperature, through the snowbound landscape to the almost unreal experience of hearing a pod of orcas. Yes - hearing. It's strange that, for me, the auditory memory remains as strong as the visual. At one point they switched off the engine on the zodiac and all you could hear in the snow muffled landscape was the lapping of water and the explosive breath of the orcas as each surfaced in turn. Look out for the baby 5 or 6 minutes in. Watching this video again is enough to give me goosebumps.

Wonderful to see orcas with snowy shorelines in the background. We don't get that black on white contrast her in the Pacific Northwest.

Your footage doesn't look very "wobbly" to me! Can you share here or on your profile page what type of camera you use? Does it have a anti-wobble feature?
  • It was a JVC miniDV model - now both obsolete and deceased I'm afraid. No image stabilisation (but quite a lot of editing out!)
