what type of animation technique is that? what's it called so that I can research how to do it myself? i love the video.. great stuff
  • Molasses Murphy 2 years ago
Thanks Jarrod! It's pencil animation for the girl and the scenes outside the treehouse at night and walking to the jam session. Pencil on paper photographed with a digital camera. The rest is digital cutout animation. Lots of drawn pieces of the characters scanned in, edited in Photoshop and then animated in After Effects. The cameras & compositing are done in that software too. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

This is really beautiful! I find the narration a bit slow though... But I don't know if it's not a style that would miss if it wasn't this way... Anyway, I love the end, the music is excellent, the character design is so cute and the backgrounds so stylish :o)
    Bravo!
  • Molasses Murphy 2 years ago
Thanks Rob! We were trying to make it as slow as possible so glad you found it only a bit too slow. :D
  • Rob Mayol 2 years ago
Hehe so it was intended. We hurry a bit too much that's for sure!

By the way, congrats for replying all the comments, not everybody still do it after more than 7000 views ;)

Love it. Did you have to 'cut out' all the frames of the scanned in animations before you composited in AE? Just wondered how you did it...Anyway, fabulous film.
  • Molasses Murphy 1 year ago
Thanks! I'm assuming you're asking about the alphachannel process. If so, yes and we used Photoshop for that part. Here's a tut on that: bit.ly/cF2Nyi
  • Bluegnu 1 year ago
Thanks...I sort of guessed that part, but I was wondering if you found a clever way of batching all those individual scanned drawings so they were masked, or whether you had to do each one individually...of that makes sense?!? Seems like a lot of work!
  • Molasses Murphy 1 year ago
I've tried but have never been able to save time by batching. So ya, a lot of tedious work to get them ready for compositing.

I'm sure there's a clever solution waiting to be found though. All depends on what your final line looks like.

    So good!

Where can I get the OST?
  • Molasses Murphy 1 year ago
    Thanks Owen!

Serious? Wasn't part of our deal with Allan and he never released the song on its own. You'll have to rip it somehow I guess. He records under the name Zapato Negro if you want to check out more of his work.
  • Owen Andrade 1 year ago
Hell yeah I'm serious! That song was golden. I just found their website, thanks.
