Mike Barnett is a phenomenal fiddler he has worked hard for 13 plus years to develope as a player. Herein he displays a style of playing called chopping.

I know I mis-spelled his name in the clip hey it was late and my editor had gone to bed! (I know dumb! sorry Mike!)

Unfortunately the mics were readjusted in mid stream since we had not had time to go over or be really clued into what the players were doing once adjusted the fiddle dominated until the last third but hey this is community radio on the fly / with this volunteer host (yours truly) wearing several hats all the while with my jaw on he floor watching mike play/chop and sing.

The Program director and two community members who were shadowing me doing the show burst out in spontaneous applause. The Program Director said with the hundred or so guests he'd witnessed play on the show that he couldn't help but applaud and that was a first.
He is a member of several bands

Oh yeah he graduates from High School next week!

BLoody hell!! That's some serious fiddle chompin!! I can almost hear some big beats on the back and Mike just slapping his rig to the gig. Definitely a unique style.

Gota compliment you with the quick reflex once you heard voice in need of the 58 more then the 57 which is already enough for the fiddle. Multi tasking video guy and audio engineer! Are we getting audio from the Shure mics or the camcorder? Or both? COz we also heard the camera thud pretty clearly when you let it to the table.

Both ways, great post!! As usual.

Yes What a player, we were on the fly for sure > We
had to move the mics , the thud you hear is caught
off one of the announce mic I had up a tad for room
sound. I use the camera sound extracted to synch the sound to the footage usually after making transitions in iMovie since if you transition after the sound is synched
it will throw off the synch (low tech mode)
Onceall the transitions are made esp front fade or wash in etc I completely delete the camera sound altogether and use a CDR recording of the show that I track to the pieces played and drag the track into that lower audio track in iMovie.
so what you hear is the sound out from the board as listeners heard it.
Had I the time I would have fashioned a small closed foam baffle to to get a bit more of his voice up, next time I hope this player comes back and we have time to really set the gear and I have a sound tech. you know,,, Thanks for the comment and your awareness.
(btw The camera is a Canon 630A, not a camcorder).
