Shot using the Sony EX1 and Letus Ultimate on a rare sunny day in Southend-On-Sea in Essex.

A short film that captures the feel of a day at a typical British seaside town.

Funny... and very British looking :)

I'm pretty sure those people would really hate that music - or am I wrong? :)
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
actually a lot of them weren't actually English. All the people in the end credits, bar the black girl were Lithaunian. Am sure you can spot the brits in the rest but a lot of them were Polish and whether they would have preferred Bobby Darrin's version? Probably! But, being a half frenchie and half englisher I don't care!

I love it! Is that you at the end, with the red shirt? I think we've seen that shirt before. Anyways very evocative, great work as usual.
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
nope. it was my feet stepping into the water!
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
what red shirt is that? can't see a shot with one? I think you meant my red waterproof coat from South Bank!

I normally do not enjoy "Day at the Beach" videos, but yours is the exception. I recognized the music from Russell Crowe's "A Good Year," one of my recent favorites.

While there were a number of shallow DOF shots, I did not see all that many that could not have been obtained with the very fine Fujinon lens on the EX1 in telephoto. Just curious what the Letus gives you in setting up your shots. Quite obviously they work!
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
Thanks Daniel. Well apart from the film look, which is rather more "organic" and less harsh than video it gave me the ability to use a wide range of different lenses, like the 17mm Nikon and the 400mm Sigma. There actually was a lot of shallow depth of field, much more than you could get with the stock lens. You'd be suprised. I would like to one day do a short with two cameras side by side to show just how different the adaptor makes things look.

Charles Trenet wrote the piece on a train journey in the South of France and it was later rewritten in English and sung by Bobby Darrin "Beyond the Sea"

wow. how did you do the slow mo at 01:51
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
Ah that was shot normal speed and I used the amazing slow mo plug in Twixtor at about 10% speed. It can have amazing effects on the right shot, the resolution becomes a little blurry sometimes and if things cross over it goes a bit weird. This is the slowest I have done one before.

Awesome colors, did you capture such saturated colors in the ex1 or did you squeeze them out with Magic Bullet? I am having a hard time getting saturated colors without making it look too "cartoonish." I aspire to someday shoot a video with you... any plans to come to California anytime soon?
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
Magic Bullet but tweaked heavily by me as the preset I used was way too saturated. Amazing how washed out the footage looked after I treated it.

Not sure about California. I hope so soon. Who knows!

Such lovely vibrant colours, and that film look. Is that just 24p or some other wonderful trickery. Who would think we brits have any bad weather after watching that.
  •
  • mintyslippers.com plus 2 years ago
Infact, the colours looks exactly like an old photo of me and my brother at the beach my parents took back in the 80's. Totally spooky and pure genius.

highly entertaining! great film as always. slomo works so well with the sea/water.
i also want to know, how much the "bullet"-treatment pushes the colors, and how it would look straight out of cam.
here and there i think the reds are very intense, but thats just a like or dislike.
thanks for putting out that much of content in that superb quality!
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
quite a lot. I will post some stills on my blog soon of treated vs untreated pics

OK, here's a question: with the unpalatable political correctness scene here in Blighty, and plod wanting to arrest anyone they can get hold of for taking pictures of anything they don't want you to, what was the reaction from ordinary folk on the beach (particularly with the number of young children around), and did you generally ask permission to film? This always concerns me and I'm never too sure how to handle it myself.

Oh, and up to your usual exceptionally high standards; yet another film as an example of what's possible to achieve by the ordinary man. (Not that you are :)
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
Ah! the trick is don't have a small camera. My rig was quite large and I had Craig standing next to me most of the time so I didn't look like a pervert. If i had an HV20 and was sitting there filming people I would have got nutted. The more professional you look the less hassle you get. The opposite of most other places!

I asked permission of some people, with the 400mm I could get people from very far away being very natural!
  • Greg Wallis 2 years ago
Yes, this makes a lot of sense. Now, me with my HG10 (even smaller than the HV20!) will have to undergo a makeover then — do you think a heavily disguised cornflake box on top of it would do? :) (Or maybe a T-shirt with "Camera Crew"...)
  • Stephen Lewis plus 2 years ago
I would go with a T-Shirt that says "Not videotaping young unsuspecting children... move along."

    :D (Snatch, 2000)

Just curious, did you try an elastic band for the timelapse pan?
And was that a very slow Wolly ending?

    Nice work Philip.
    A favourite of your shorts.

    =)
  • Philip Bloom plus 2 years ago
Hi Charles, The timelapse pan is really slow. About twenty minutes. Only the motorized head would do the trick.

Yes to Wally Dolly at the end. If you go to my blog you can read about my failed attempt to try a timelapse dolly shot, hence in the end just went for a reallly smooth and slow track back.

Philip, I think I've spotted your cameo, at 1.00? You've shaved your head, put on some weight and got yourself a couple of tattoos by the look of it ;)

Looks great by the way. Plenty of interesting footage and lots of vibrant colours. I'd be curious to see a before and after though? To see how far you tweak that Magic Bullet.
  •
  • I'm fast becoming a fan of your work Philip ... you're a `people` watcher, and what a strange bunch of mamals we are, nothing else like us on the planet lol.

I love the EX1 ... I'll have one in a few months. Did you see they've released 32Gb memory sticks with plans for 64Gb cards later in the year?

I wish Sony developed the EX1 around a 100Gb internal hard drive for general filming, and memory sticks for special effects - though it is possible to plug the Ex1 into an outboard hard drive, but its costly.
