Nine year-old Merel van Stam in Macha, Zambia interacts with her teacher, Kristin Shoemaker, in Minnesota, USA, in a live lesson. Merel has had about one year of piano lessons, all remote. This lesson demonstrates the emphasis of playing by ear in instruction, in keeping the orally-driven culture in which Merel lives. Software used includes Internet MIDI (the animated piano keyboard on the computer screen), which transmits electronic MIDI signals between pianos.
