Good work. Although I am not sure that renting an Arri worth the money when you can buy a good prosumer camera that would look the same for the same money you rent the Arri for.
  • isiah flores 4 months ago
a prosumer camera will never look the same as 35mm film.. I'm surprised you don't know this. have you seen the latitude and technical advances of the new KODAK vision 3 5219 .. film is how films are made. it's been like that throughout the history of cinema. digital cinema is on it's way, and here to stay, and i love both.. try shooting 35mm film. you'll see
  • Eugenia Loli-Queru 4 months ago
I am not interested in "film" as in "film". I am interested only in the "movie look". And your argument, is the EXACT SAME argument that film photographers would flood the photography forums 5-7 years ago. But then digital won. You can buy a Canon 5D today and have so much better quality than any film still camera, no grain, clean and sharp pictures.

That's where film goes in the movie industry too: the way of the dodo. Digital is here to stay because it's the future. If you can't see this development, then I would be worry.

I have to say that I, too, am only concerned with the final look. Providing the end result is as I want it ( a movie-style look, that comes visually close to 35mm film) then that will do nicely. The incredible convenience of the digital format (and, indeed, cheapness!) far outweighs any purist thoughts I might have. Creativity rules, and digital offers this in abundance — small indie filmmakers have never had it so good.

The colours, saturation, and contrast in this film are great, but if you said to me that someone like Philip Bloom had made it on a Sony EX1 with a Letus, then I don't think I would have been able to tell the difference (and I doubt many other people would, either).

But keep it up, because this is good stuff.

If i could shoot 35mm film as easily as i can with digital, I would invest all my dimes into an arri. digital will never be as good as actual film. The Red cam is going to be the turn of digital inside the cinema probably but the whole process of shooting with actual film is so much more meaningful.

I think that now. with digital and film looking so much alike. its no longer about the LOOK. Post production has everything to create anything. BUT. The difference with shooting FILM as to DIGITAL is the connection between the image and the artist. the romance and care you put into each frame. I shoot digital most the time. But when i shoot film (even super 8) i slow everything down. I spend more time planning my shots. or i put trust in the film and the unknown and shoot off the cuff. and when I get that film back, this feeling cant even compare to plugging in a p2 card or logging a tape. Digital doesn't physically exist and Film does. So when you create a digital picture. you get ____.

    just my 2 cents
i love both formats. Nothing but love from me.
  • mike ambs 3 months ago
I agree with Jake here - the feeling of shooting film is different, but the look, not so much with the right 35kit on a decent HD camera. I mean, if you were playing this on a theater screen, you could see the differences I'm sure if you were looking for them.

But anywhere else, not so much.

I know shooting with 35mm can be a blast, but it's expensive and time consuming... personally, I'd opt for digital with a kit and some SLR lenses just so I could do what I love doing more often: tell stories.

Keep up the great work :)

    Amen.

Isiah, great stuff. It's lit very nicely. Lighting's my biggest concern with a lot of HD Cinematographers, some assume that since what they see is what they get, there's no reason to worry about the lighting. It's interesting when you look at the comments people leave on prosumer HD videos and in most cases the reasons why people say they're beautiful is because of their resolution. There's seems to be this belief that clarity is good cinematography. I really dig what you've done here.

It's always funny when people say prosumer HD and 35mm are similar. That debate kinda goes away when you project your piece in a theater. Yeah, there might not be much difference in the "film look" when you're watching the two on Vimeo, but in any other context you clearly can tell. The clarity of Prosumer HD just kinda messes up that suspension of disbelief, ya know?

And like you've said, I don't think the use of HD is going to knock 35mm out of the picture at all.

Man, oh man. Fantastic cinematography. It really is refreshing to see someone do a short film in 35mm, especially one this outstanding. I had gotten used to seeing short films in digital, but this is a wonderful break from that.
  • isiah flores 4 months ago
Thanks Nathan.. Films will always be shot on Film no matter what the revolution is.. Don't get me wrong, I love working with the digital format, it's freeing and forgiving.. I do believe everyone should shoot film or try to shoot film in their lives. It's a fantastic experience that opened my eyes, and earned my respect.

    Thanks for watching !!

    Beautiful shots. Nice mood.
I like it how it stays interesting without any dialoge. Good job.

    GREAT --

Digital is nothing like film, does not feel like film, does not give the same image as film, and no matter what, it looks sterile. 35mm adapters and some sketchy color correction with Magic Bullet cannot replicate or even come close with looking like film.

Albeit, I don't mind footage that much from the Panavision Genesis or the RED camera... but those are just as expensive to get a hold of as a 35mm, and cost just as much to use.

A careless cinematographer, in my experience will always get a more beautiful looking shot with film, than with digital.

what a bullshit conversation. either the film is dope or it ain't.

I've got to disagree with you there. "The medium is the message." -- McLuhan

  • Joe Moya 3 months ago
Hmmm... interesting... I always thought the message is the message... it either communicates the message(s) or it does not regardless of the medium.

Exactly how much the medium adds value (or subtracts) is pretty much dependent of what the intent of the message. And, IMHO...in some (if not most) instances (specially when it comes to technology) the medium is not as influencial as the message.

Honestly, if you hadn't said it was film... I could not have determined the difference.

    Good video/film BTW...
  • pato 3 months ago
Joe is right on in my book!
  • mike ambs 3 months ago
Yea, I'm with Joe too... the "medium is the message" is just... silly. Who gives a poo' what the medium is :) it's the story that's engaging - not what stock was used to tell it. *nods*

this is still a black hole conversation, but i like to believe either it comes from the right place in the heart of a film maker or it doesn't. in the end, i don't care if its film or digity or whatever, as long as there is some kind of connection, thats all that matters. thanks everyone for watching the film... no one has really commented on the story and the excecution ( cinematography, color, score, etc ) please.. I would like to know ..

cinema is cinema . cinema is life . no matter if you write a story on your computer or on a type writer or on an iphone - it's still a story.

  • Joe Moya 3 months ago
Technically it was very good... the cinematography, light, color, music and film editing was very good... but, is this intended to be more of a learning (perhaps testing) experience? Or, was the intent of the short film more? If so, I had a problem understanding the meaning and couldn't get a grasp of the story's purpose... which probably shows you what I know about this type of art.

Great images, really good camera moves, and style. I felt sort of bad for her, but she seemed ok. I'll have to watch it again to pick up on everything. Good for you for shooting film, let alone 35mm. It is something in its self, I've only gotten to work with 16mm a few times, but working with real film is something a prosumer camera can't come close to, anyone who has held their movie on a spool knows that.

Wow. That vision 3 stock looks amazing. I am so impressed with the highlights when she goes outside. Beautiful looking stock. Can't wait till digital can match that.
I will say though that some shots seem underexposed, and in some shots the whites seem crushed. I guess it's just that I wish there were more contrast in some of the shots, which can be hard when you're working with 14 STOPS LATTITUDE!! Haha.

So what does this short mean? I'm trying to figure it out. :D Nice work.

awesome work mate, i must say.. pretty damn Flawless!

love the look and i agree, a prosumer camera will NEVER achieve a look exactly like this, and i hope it stays that way.

Did you shoot 2-perf or was this cropped in post? My favorite shots were at the end handheld on the roof. I just felt like it really needed more sound- did you go Mos or were you not happy with your sound?

    Thanks for posting this!

  • isiah flores 30 days ago
it was cropped for 2.35 in post. masked and marked for 2.35 while shooting.

i shot the rooftop scene MOS.

thanks a bunch for watching !!!

    cheers
