Sorry, this English version of the video is not available now. I appliciate you guys comments and critiques.

Kenichi

--------------------
I created this information graphic motion piece as my final thesis project. my objective is to make Japanese people think about what is happening in their own country, and that some aspects of Japanese culture are not that normal. The deliberate English narrationoffers a point of view on Japan that isn't usually considered by Japanese people, and therefore conveys a 'foreign' perspective.

This is amazingly informative, and constantly eye-catching in its designs too. A friend and I watched this together, and we agree there's so much negative data that we would never have expected.

But, an entertaining watch nonetheless. Excellent work. :)

1 billion people face starvation? That's awful.
I think we all could end this with a little organization.

This video was very informative Kenichi!

Nice graphic work, but some numbers would be more interesting if compared to other country's stat. Like water for instance, USA at least has the same problem, it's not a japanese problem per se. Food waste as well, i'll be curious to know how much is wasted in Europe, to compare. Knowning how much Europe is giving away as charity, is not enough i think.

I thought your video was very well done, otsukare-sama deshita. As a long-term resident of Japan (half-Jpnse American) I agree Japan is different, strange is probably not PC, I would use unique. And many people say it is a land of contradiction but that makes the place quite interesting I would argue.

A couple of comments, maybe I heard wrong but in the beginning you said Japan was one of the countries with its own unique culture. Almost ALL countries has its own unique culture. The problem I think is people do not always agree on what makes up the term "culture". I do find it sad that so many people in Japan chose to commit suicide, which is not a good thing. The government should do more to prevent it.

    Again, good job!

in this piece i suppose it makes sense that some mysterious "you" made this country because some mysterious force also brought bombs of horrendous destruction and death for no apparent reason -- which seems to be almost the first thing that happened there. i do appreciate at about 7:45 the tuna issue, i hope it's accurate, i found it shocking. the suicide issue was touching. the overall point, while graphically enjoyable, is too shaky to fully trust.
  • Job van der Zwan 1 year ago
You may have a point about the bombs, but it's not the focus of movie. The focus is eight features of modern Japanese culture. It's hard to deny Japanese culture is made by the Japanese people.

This is the English translation, but the original piece was aimed at the Japanese, in which case the "you" makes perfect sense.
  • stephanie mote 1 year ago
Job, you make a good point. I totally forgot by the end that the original was aimed at Japan. That makes a lot more sense now.

Before fellow Americans feel good about themselves by how "strange" Japan is portrayed here - you should know...

Japan has the best recycling program in the world. They send only 16% of their solid waste to landfills. The United States sends close to 70%.

The United States also generates 1.5 times as much garbage per person as Japan. We waste more food. We use more bottled water.

The facts in this video aren't inaccurate, but the cheeky, snide remarks of the narrator when comparing world starvation statistics with Japan's waste are disingenuous at best. The author of this video would do good getting a job in PR/marketing... impartial academic research doesn't seem to be their thing.
  • Zaru Kishimen 1 year ago
Yes, America is similar to my country, Australia when it comes to waste.

Great style and animation, love it, though, like some others who have already commented, I too have a problem with the content and narration.

The beginning started out well, but it quickly changed into some over-simplified and quite biased view of Japan. There was unnecessary racism/generalisations, sarcastic opinions and guilt-laden stats/facts. The chosen 8 elements of Japan made little sense and I assume were made after the facts were found. How is Japan "strange" compared to anywhere else? I hope the script has fallen foul of bad translation and not just bad writing.

This could've been a brilliant piece of infotainment.

I appreciate your work a lot. I am Japanese and a student in the US. I also found many strange things about Japan since I could see Japan from different point of view.
My grand ma always told me not to waste food, appreciate all you have, and so on but it is true that the development of economic and technology make Japanese people forget many things. We don't even realize things.

I hope many Japanese people watch this video and open their eyes to the world. This video make me realize many things.

Great vid. One criticism though, the food Japan wastes has nothing to do with people starving in africa and it's unfair to try to play a guilt trip on them for throwing away food they don't want. If anything, they should save more leftovers and get used to living like that. I can't wait to see your next project.

About the content: mankind IS a strange species and thus every country will look strange, when you break it down like this.
(Of course, there are always those who will criticize you for stating facts... the truth hurts.)

One fact I find strange about Japan: you guys have vending machines selling school-girls used panties. Now THAT fact is definitely missing in this vid! ;)

This is of course a bit stereotype. But I think that's by intention and it's ok because it was presented in a quite entertaining and not degrading way. And the cartoon visuals fitted the topic very well. Cartoons are so big in Japan :-))

  •
  • Cool flash and I love the graphics. But the overall tone of this is fairly stereotypical. It would be interesting to see these segments of tree usage, food usage, and bad water in comparison to other countries. In other words, the agenda is understood... but does it really pertain specifically to Japan?

  •
  • furball 1 year ago
Excuse me Kenichi but the high suicide rate doesn't accurately reflect a lower happiness level than in the countries with less suicides.

It is possible that in other countries, due to religion, tradition, education, beliefs etc. people just have a view where the act of suicide is much less acceptable.
  •
  • Jang Ho Kwon 1 year ago
I actually found this very patronizing. A lot of the facts are the same in all developed countries. Yes, Japanese people waste a lot of food and use wooden chopsticks, but its not like its only Japan. A billion people are dying of starvation yes but how is that related to Japan?

No matter how good the animation is, the content is the most important factor in any art work and i feel a lot of people here on vimeo forget that fact.

I also understand that you are Japanese Kenichi, but if you were to just watch this film without your message below, people would find this video insulting. Maybe this works better in Japanese, i dont know, but i have a feeling even in Japanese, it would be very preachy and condescending.

    Well done with terrific design.
  •
  • Great animations and graphics, but it just focus on the negative things of Japan, its most like an anti Japan movie.

    Japan have great things also.

By the way, im not Japanese, im from Chile, South America. But i found this movie a bit (or a lot) insulting, you can´t just focus on the negative things of a country, theres always two sides of a coin.

    グラフィックとアニメーションはすごいですね!僕はオーストラリア人ですけど、日本に住んでいた時に、同じことを考えました。
But when I returned to Australia, I found that Australia is also a strange country:

Australia is the world's driest inhabited continent, yet it is also one of the world's biggest consumers and exporters of beef and dairy, despite the fact that these products are the most water-intensive in agriculture. The dairy industry is the largest user of irrigated water in Australia.

Australia is the second most wasteful country in the world per capita in terms of municipal waste. Japan is only 17th. nationmaster.com/graph/env_mun_was_gen-environment-municipal-waste-generation

Australia is the fattest nation in the world per capita.

Australia is one of the stingiest nations in the world in terms of foreign aid, donating only 34 cents in every $100 of income. Better than Japan, but still very stingy compared to most other developed nations.

Australia has the world's highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions.

Australia persists with many forms of inhumane animal treatment (such as live export and the mulesing of lambs) despite being vehemently opposed to whaling on the grounds that it is inhumane.

Australia has the worst record in the world for extinct species.

    オーストラリアもう変な国でしょう?
  • Dan Valentine plus 1 year ago
Australia is one of the biggest consumers/exporters of beef simply because it HAS so many beef cattle. As for irrigated water, it's only the fact that the water infrastructure is poorly constructed, not that there isn't enough water.

Australia may produce too much waste, but you haven't mentioned that it recycled a great deal of that waste.

There are too many fat people, but the USA is still winning that race. Strangle enough, when I walk around, I don't see all that many fat people getting around. I guess they're at home sitting on the couch watching vimeo movies.

I think foreign aid should be limited. There are enough problems in Australia that need fixing first.

Australia only has a population of 21 million. The country is vast. Our greenhouse emissions have minimal effect on our population compared to countries like Japan.

What's the answer to live export? Dead export? Blame the importers, not the exporters. Now, with regard to mulesing, do you understand the options? Granted, there are new techniques being used now, but that is new technology. Until now, mulesing was far more humane for the sheep than what they suffered at the hand of blow fly infestation. Australia is opposed to whaling by Japanese because it is totally unnecessary. I don't think that the killing of whales is the inhumane thing, it's the reason for it.

Regarding extinction. It's a sad fact that species are becoming extinct, but I would argue that it's not all the fault of the inhabitants.

    1. This is like saying that America uses so many bullets only because it has so many guns. Absurd argument. Cows are not native to Australia and animal husbandry is inherently water intensive.

    2. Japan is one of the top 10 recyclers in the world: Australia doesn't even make the list.  chaimedia.com/list/443.html

    3. No, Australia is the fattest per capita.
     abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2008/s2280848.htm
Even if this were untrue, second fattest per capita wouldn't be much to brag about.

    4. No, we can do both. Are you saying we can't afford even $1 in every $100?

    5. This paragraph doesn't make much sense. Our relatively small population doesn't give us the right to live more extravagantly than more populated countries.

    6. Yes, Dan. The answer is sending chilled meat, not live animals. The responsibility is a dual one. Mulesing is a problem that we created ourselves through breeding, and breeding is also  the way it will be solved in the long term. In the short term, clips may be used. The fact that we've taken so long to commit to solving the problem shows how far behind we are in animal rights. The main ethical argument against whaling is that there is no humane way to kill a whale. Whaling is unnecessary? As long as you have arable land, killing any animal is unnecessary.

    7. We are now in the midst of the 6th mass extinction, and it is caused by humans, mainly through habitat loss.

Right now I'm studying in japan as a foreigner student. I saw the video and was slightly feeling uneasy, but I'm more amazed that this was done by a Japanese.

Congratulations young man, I feel as if I can see the change happening. The younger generations have started to question the practices of the past, and I feel it is only a matter of time until Japan again becomes a more normal country, sometime in the future.
