Sorry, this English version of the video is not available now. I appliciate you guys comments and critiques.

I created this information graphic motion piece as my final thesis project. my objective is to make Japanese people think about what is happening in their own country, and that some aspects of Japanese culture are not that normal. The deliberate English narrationoffers a point of view on Japan that isn't usually considered by Japanese people, and therefore conveys a 'foreign' perspective.

But, an entertaining watch nonetheless. Excellent work. :)
I think we all could end this with a little organization.
This video was very informative Kenichi!
youtube.com/watch?v=HW5eBfZhE4M
& dat is sum good chanel on youtube as well U can find bits about food waste there as well ;)
A couple of comments, maybe I heard wrong but in the beginning you said Japan was one of the countries with its own unique culture. Almost ALL countries has its own unique culture. The problem I think is people do not always agree on what makes up the term "culture". I do find it sad that so many people in Japan chose to commit suicide, which is not a good thing. The government should do more to prevent it.
Again, good job!
This is the English translation, but the original piece was aimed at the Japanese, in which case the "you" makes perfect sense.
This is a great movie.
My regret with the english version is to have put an english voice. I think the japanese voice with english subtitle would have worked better.
This said , living in Japan married to a japanese woman、I would not change a word of this film
Can you imagine whole series with other countries :)
Japan has the best recycling program in the world. They send only 16% of their solid waste to landfills. The United States sends close to 70%.
The United States also generates 1.5 times as much garbage per person as Japan. We waste more food. We use more bottled water.
The facts in this video aren't inaccurate, but the cheeky, snide remarks of the narrator when comparing world starvation statistics with Japan's waste are disingenuous at best. The author of this video would do good getting a job in PR/marketing... impartial academic research doesn't seem to be their thing.
Would like to see a USA: The Strange Country and how they compare.
If Japan is a strange country... the "good old U.S. of A. is much, much more strange... and, who created this strange country? YOU DID. :)
I really love this video <3
Spanish subtitles please!!!
Great video! ;-)
The beginning started out well, but it quickly changed into some over-simplified and quite biased view of Japan. There was unnecessary racism/generalisations, sarcastic opinions and guilt-laden stats/facts. The chosen 8 elements of Japan made little sense and I assume were made after the facts were found. How is Japan "strange" compared to anywhere else? I hope the script has fallen foul of bad translation and not just bad writing.
This could've been a brilliant piece of infotainment.
Anyway, けにちさん、よくできました!好きです!It inspired me to work on my own portfolio more ^_^
but good things is all of things is truth
I love it! keep up good work
My grand ma always told me not to waste food, appreciate all you have, and so on but it is true that the development of economic and technology make Japanese people forget many things. We don't even realize things.
I hope many Japanese people watch this video and open their eyes to the world. This video make me realize many things.
Thank you,
What a nice infromatic, too.
very compact and easy to know about things.
I think it's very simple but stylish.
Once again I want to say,
amazingly informative and entertaining!
I have to thank you. :-)

Great vid. One criticism though, the food Japan wastes has nothing to do with people starving in africa and it's unfair to try to play a guilt trip on them for throwing away food they don't want. If anything, they should save more leftovers and get used to living like that. I can't wait to see your next project.

About the content: mankind IS a strange species and thus every country will look strange, when you break it down like this.
(Of course, there are always those who will criticize you for stating facts... the truth hurts.)
One fact I find strange about Japan: you guys have vending machines selling school-girls used panties. Now THAT fact is definitely missing in this vid! ;)
I plan to use this fantastic little work of magnificence to send to people abroad asking me "what is japan like to live"
You little beauty.
Cheers
and all the best

remember ww2? usa?
and i'm think francias paul is right... very stereotypical, but in the graphics and infographic is a materpiece
Where did the inspiration came from?
It is possible that in other countries, due to religion, tradition, education, beliefs etc. people just have a view where the act of suicide is much less acceptable.
No matter how good the animation is, the content is the most important factor in any art work and i feel a lot of people here on vimeo forget that fact.
I also understand that you are Japanese Kenichi, but if you were to just watch this film without your message below, people would find this video insulting. Maybe this works better in Japanese, i dont know, but i have a feeling even in Japanese, it would be very preachy and condescending.
Japan have great things also.
By the way, im not Japanese, im from Chile, South America. But i found this movie a bit (or a lot) insulting, you can´t just focus on the negative things of a country, theres always two sides of a coin.
ps: sorry if my english sux ;)
i love it
But when I returned to Australia, I found that Australia is also a strange country:
Australia is the world's driest inhabited continent, yet it is also one of the world's biggest consumers and exporters of beef and dairy, despite the fact that these products are the most water-intensive in agriculture. The dairy industry is the largest user of irrigated water in Australia.
Australia is the second most wasteful country in the world per capita in terms of municipal waste. Japan is only 17th. nationmaster.com/graph/env_mun_was_gen-environment-municipal-waste-generation
Australia is the fattest nation in the world per capita.
Australia is one of the stingiest nations in the world in terms of foreign aid, donating only 34 cents in every $100 of income. Better than Japan, but still very stingy compared to most other developed nations.
Australia has the world's highest per capita greenhouse gas emissions.
Australia persists with many forms of inhumane animal treatment (such as live export and the mulesing of lambs) despite being vehemently opposed to whaling on the grounds that it is inhumane.
Australia has the worst record in the world for extinct species.
オーストラリアもう変な国でしょう?
Australia may produce too much waste, but you haven't mentioned that it recycled a great deal of that waste.
There are too many fat people, but the USA is still winning that race. Strangle enough, when I walk around, I don't see all that many fat people getting around. I guess they're at home sitting on the couch watching vimeo movies.
I think foreign aid should be limited. There are enough problems in Australia that need fixing first.
Australia only has a population of 21 million. The country is vast. Our greenhouse emissions have minimal effect on our population compared to countries like Japan.
What's the answer to live export? Dead export? Blame the importers, not the exporters. Now, with regard to mulesing, do you understand the options? Granted, there are new techniques being used now, but that is new technology. Until now, mulesing was far more humane for the sheep than what they suffered at the hand of blow fly infestation. Australia is opposed to whaling by Japanese because it is totally unnecessary. I don't think that the killing of whales is the inhumane thing, it's the reason for it.
Regarding extinction. It's a sad fact that species are becoming extinct, but I would argue that it's not all the fault of the inhabitants.
2. Japan is one of the top 10 recyclers in the world: Australia doesn't even make the list. chaimedia.com/list/443.html
3. No, Australia is the fattest per capita.
abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2008/s2280848.htm
Even if this were untrue, second fattest per capita wouldn't be much to brag about.
4. No, we can do both. Are you saying we can't afford even $1 in every $100?
5. This paragraph doesn't make much sense. Our relatively small population doesn't give us the right to live more extravagantly than more populated countries.
6. Yes, Dan. The answer is sending chilled meat, not live animals. The responsibility is a dual one. Mulesing is a problem that we created ourselves through breeding, and breeding is also the way it will be solved in the long term. In the short term, clips may be used. The fact that we've taken so long to commit to solving the problem shows how far behind we are in animal rights. The main ethical argument against whaling is that there is no humane way to kill a whale. Whaling is unnecessary? As long as you have arable land, killing any animal is unnecessary.
7. We are now in the midst of the 6th mass extinction, and it is caused by humans, mainly through habitat loss.

Congratulations young man, I feel as if I can see the change happening. The younger generations have started to question the practices of the past, and I feel it is only a matter of time until Japan again becomes a more normal country, sometime in the future.
...and I'm a Greek :P
