    HAHAHA! I guessed it right:
    Tokina 11-16mm F2.8

I'm so obsessed with that lens it's not even funny.

    amazing lens
  • I have one of these Tokina 11-16mm lenses on the way finally. I had to buy it on ebay from someone in Japan, none of the normal places have it in stock.

Beautiful film, as always. :) The T2i can sure produce some amazing footage in the right hands. What lens/lenses did you use?

I was considering getting myself a T2i. Unfortunately, when I learned about the rolling shutter issues, along with all the other difficulties and sacrifices that come with using a DSLR for video, I decided that this camera is not for me. I currently use a Canon XH-A1 and a Letus35. That's a good setup anyway, right?
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
its the right tool for the right job Andrew. Be aware of the issues and work around them. That's what I do and that's why it the Canons are my number one choice right now.

Hey Philip. This is amazing! Beautiful images and scenery. The Location has everything to offer for a great shoot. Probably the best video you made so far! I like all the stuff, but this one stands out in my opinion! Very nice.

You said the camera overheated. How hot was it or is that more of a continuos running thing and not relevant to external temperature? Did you see any damage shooting in this dust?

Amazing shots and I love the widescreen effect. I am very happy with my T2i but now I need more lenses.

OMG! Philip what are you doing down there? I grew up there - My grandmother still lives there!

I've been going down there since I was 10 and I'm nearly cough - fort..cough.

You know there used to be some great flooded buildings on the west side and trailers - Also there is the old motel which have been cool. And if you go during the die out - dead fish and flooded buildings..um..okay that's not sexy...

Was that Travitene rock in the last shot?

Looked like such a lot of fun making this. The pink caravan is brilliant. Should have had a post-Mad Max Mel Gibson inside swigging a bottle of brandy.

Nice music, I remember using it once in my short film at uni.

The 100mm macro lens is astounding.

Great work Philip. Any reason for the switch from 2.35:1 to 2.55:1 - technical or you just wanted a wider aspect ratio?
  •
  • Toby G. 1 year ago
    wow great job!
my favorite is the 2:55 - 2:59 part, looks aweeesome!
the music and the location reminds me a bit of tarantino's "from dusk till dawn" especially the part i mentioned.

thanks for sharing mr bloom !

    cheers

Lovely colours I must say. It really is a very interesting location, and you captured it beautifully.

One thing I found a bit unsettling though, and that's the composition of some shots. My guess is that the ultra-wide screen thingy caused the composition to be overcrowded, and in some shots even over-cropped.

In my 30-plus years working as a photojournalist I have dropped non-pro cameras in creeks, buried them in snow and shot on beaches and sand dunes and in the howling chinook winds of bone-dry southern Alberta and have only ever had one camera fail. Just use a bit of common sense and get out there and shoot. Cameras are tools. Don't be afraid of a little dust and damp or you'll miss out on some fantastic opportunities.
Good for you, Mr. Bloom, for getting out and doing it. Keep up the kick-ass work.

great, just one more reason to get the 100 mm 2.8 is...incredible lens

do you know the glidetrack system? if so, what do you like more: the kessler pocket dolly or the glidetrack?
the one from kessler is quite expensive..
  • Jeff Arnold plus 1 year ago
Yes but having the belt gives the option of using a motor for even smoother dolly moves and works great with time lapses. I have the pocket dolly and am a big fan.
  • tschikay 1 year ago
there's just that impressive video from mungkey vimeo.com/9102729 made with a glidetrack, that's why I'm not sure yet..

Philip, I’d also like to chime in and reiterate that this is the best work you’ve ever done. I’ve watched nearly every video you’ve posted, and it’s been amazing to see your stylistic evolution. But this video absolutely blew me away. You know when something is great when all of a sudden you don’t care what kind of camera it was shot on or what lens you were using. It transcends technology. The imagery is absolutely majestic. When we speak of 24 frames per second, we often forget that they are indeed “frames”. Each frame in this video is truly a thing of beauty unto its own. You’ve created a mood-piece, enriched by the post-apocalyptic setting and seemingly nourished by the hand of Dali himself. Bravo, Philip.

When I read "BEACH" on the title I thought it was gonna be all mushi stuff, a day on the beach with kids playing, sand castles, chocolate flavored carebears with dumb ass hearts glowing from their tummy and a giant mouse with a stupid squeaky voice and his yellow dog all having fun under a great big yellow orange flavored sun with the whole family.. But no, it's actually really good and serious work. EXCELLENT

As a native Californian, and having worked and played all my 58 years in these locations you've been shooting (Venice boardwalk, Skywalker Ranch back in the sixties, and the Salton Sea for high school spring breaks) I just thought I should mention that (IMHO) you have really captured the heart and soul of all these locations, not just with your images, but the music and sounds you select. I love all your work, but these ones are very special for me. These California portraits are truly inspiring, artistically. Thanks Philip for giving so much. (forgive the comparison... but I think of you as a kind of environmental James Audubon.) You flatter your subject, but still tell the truth. Remarkable.
