Every year during a mid-March weekend, the people of Omihachiman, outside of Kyoto, celebrate a fire matsuri. On Saturday, 13 floats parade through the town and are judged and awarded prizes. On Sunday, the floats congregate at the Himure Hachiman Shrine for jousting. Later that evening the floats return for a final farewell and destruction by fire.
