Track: 'Let's Buy Happiness' by Boys Noize
The animation started out as a week long project based around Human Rights; set in my final year of university. The aim of the project was to visually represent certain phrases in any chosen way. I believe the phrase that I was given was 'all people have the right to be free from coercion'. From this I came about creating this piece that was almost like an examination into someone's head regarding the way that they are controlled - this control comes from sources that they have no control over. The tongue-in-cheek use of subliminal messages and still frames involves the viewer and puts them on the receiving end of the hidden meanings.
I chose to do it in the style of VJ material as this was my first attempt at this kind of work, and I had taken an interest in this field of video art around that time. I felt that having the video move to the music made the images more prominent - as there is sound when there is an image for the most parts, almost like an assault on the senses (again linking back to the concept of mind control).
The track is 'Let's Buy Happiness' by Boys Noize - a title fitting for this project and also helped in deciding what the video would be about - in this sense I wanted it to be as if the track and the video were working hand in hand.
In terms of it's style, at the moment it is very simplistic looking, and doesn't have a great deal of depth to it - however within the short time frame, I don't think I could have done a great deal more without taking a lot of imagery from elsewhere: i.e. the internet. And I'd rather not do that... It is still a project that I would like to take further, and since the time I completed it I have been collecting imagery that I feel is inspiring to furthering this piece. In addition to this, I would like to animate to the entire track, especially as the track has a very different ending to the beginning, with a distinct change in tone, perhaps making the piece jump from a choppy flash of images to perhaps a slower moving more moody setting - this actually links in with my other piece 'Ø (The Shell)', further description about this can be read on it's own page.
