“Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of Jesus’ disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, ‘Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?’”
Judas was kind of right in a way that the elder brother from the Parable of the Prodigal Son was not. He was right about the need to help the poor. But Judas had either forgotten or he had never experienced the reason Jesus helped the poor in the first place, the reason he gave sight to the blind, made lame legs strong, healed the sick and raised the dead. Jesus did all those things because life is a precious gift.
