  • magnifique, thanks Jordan

the first 10 seconds are really beautiful. From this point, i only see cliché backward-effects and exaggerated science fiction color effects.
  • Jordan Clarke plus 2 years ago
well i was going for the exaggerated science fiction effects, not everyones cup of tea. But thanks for the criticism, this is a rough copy for a final school project and any criticism is appreciated, thats why I post on this site.
  • Brad Petty plus 2 years ago
Sieger is funny. Cliché is a big, fancy word. Don't let him get you down Jordan. I constantly try to think of how to do good video without necessarily having a story line. You pull this off no problem. Too bad Simon....I mean Sieger feels its necessary to critique (Wow, look that one up Sieg) your videos as if anyone cares. I must admit that all the critics I find on here usually have the worst videos. I really love his "visual effects". I think my 3 year old accidentally bumped my keyboard the other night and dropped his effects into one of my videos.
Not everyone can inspire the masses like yourself Sieger.
  • Underground Planet plus 2 years ago
Well Said Brad, was thinking the same thing. I totally respect your graciousness Jordan cuz criticism wasn't asked for in your videos description and therefor was unnecessary and uncalled for imho. But out of curiosity I did go check out Sieger's vid's and, well, I'll just say always consider the source.

All that said, before I even got into reading the replies I thought it was a great vid. Beautifully shot and I personally liked the decisions you made in post.

  • Mischa de Wilt 2 years ago
I don't really see what's the problem with sharing critique. Not something to get all fussed up about.

Anyway, I really like the video; the petals are a great idea and work really well, especially at 1:18.

The video could have been a bit shorter and used some more locations in my opinion. I'm also not too fond of the font you used. But that's just some minor stuff, overall spectacular work.
  • astute 2 years ago
    Agreed with Hamflank.
The video looks nice, well shot, some minor errors. But the editing needs a lot of attention.
Slow motion is cool and all, but it's a lot too long.
Get a second subject for this length, find a girl who is also good at jumping (get some tension between the two).
Or use more locations to shoot it at.

Not having a story line doesn't mean that you shouldn't create one. With two subjects, or just having more interaction with the sound or the environment you can create a lot more punch.

Look at it like a Bob Ross painting, a lot of technique and a pretty picture but no real story behind it.

Think of a good story first, and then build upon that. (or make it considerably shorter and go for the shock and awe tactic)

Critique or not... Some vids posted on vimeo are praised into heaven and dont even come near the quality of this one. Just look at the statistics of this movie and let those numbers speak for themselves!
Great great job Jordan, looking forward to your next vid!

Nice work Jordan, I really like the effects you used for this one. Very smooth dolly work too; I love shots like that. I especially liked the few close-up shots done where the subject is going over the camera (1:10).

    Curious,
How did you get that halo effect around your highlights? ie, what do you mean by "glow lighting", filters or post?

Love the video by the way.

    and keep pushing the boundaries.
  • iamdamion 2 years ago
I agree. The petals really added a lot, especially with the glow effect.

Of course, at one point I was thinking "damn, were they picking those up after each shot to keep throwing, or did they have bags and bags of petals?!"

then I smack myself and stop thinking such things. :)

Hey Jordan- I work in Final Cut Pro- can you describe your workflow to create those effects? Both for the Balloon/Fishing Wire and the Human Movement vids?
  • Jordan Clarke plus 2 years ago
I have a huge amount of plug-ins that i use for this video, mainly FX Factory's optical glow, for the balloon effect i did, usually i use after effects but for this i used the 3 way color correction in fcp, theres a drop down menu in the 3 way color correction, you isolate the color with the eye dropper then bring the saturation down.

The first song is from m83's new album, the song isyou apearing. The next song is M83, its called lower your eyes to die with the sun. The next song is sigur ros, staraflur. The next song is by the besnard lakes, its called devastation, and the last song is the first song.
The person in the video is actually me, I'm twenty years old and live in vancouver canada. I set up the shots with my camera and got my friends to film. Thanks again for the encouragement.

Hey man, overall I loved it. My only major issue with it is:

    a) your fonts... is that the same font at the beginning and end? and why are the fonts different at the beginning and end? Additionally, you have it as "Human Movement in Light" at the beginning, but it's "Human Movement with Light" at the end. And there's a period after Light in the end set as well. I think it would be nice to have that consistency throughout, ie. title sequence or something.

    b) Glad to see Vancouver representing :)

    Otherwise, really loved it.

  • zach marsh 2 years ago
hahahahaha dude this video is excellent!

The Besnard Lakes song was an excellent choice by the way, and I like the sync of that song with your landing. Also, there was one petal that came really close to the camera right before that shot and it looked awesome dude haha. That kinda stuff rocks.

    Take care!

I'm glad you are looking for feedback. Sometimes getting critiqued is the only way to improve our craft. What Sieger said might help you out in terms of your audience and what you want to present. I have a couple of things I want to mention: First of all, the title doesn't add anything new to the piece; your description is enough. Perhaps you might want to look for another word for movement, but I would try to keep it simple. The music changes too often, especially at the beginning. The transitions from one song to the next are not smooth and as a result, distracting. The repertoire of songs carries too many moods, and the duration of each does not allow the viewer to enter a specific mood. A couple last points, the camera is a little shaky when you do dolly shots. I'm guessing you had your camera on a skateboard and someone pushed it along. You can tell that the image jumps a little. And one last thing, there is vigneting on the bottom left hand shot in some of the shots. It is less apparent when the screen is small, but when you watch the video full screen this can be quite distracting. Again, don't let this discourage you. Make new work constantly. Little by little you start improving on previous mistakes. And remember, getting critiqued is one of the best ways to improve our work. Best of luck...

Awesome work man, I really like the glow effects. And I love the m83. I would either stick to one song the whole time, or crossfade between them better, the changing of the songs seem to bring attention to themselves, it should be a little more seamless I guess. Other than that you got a great look and awesome contrast with the hvx. What scene files did you use? 1080 or 720?

I have to say I've never posted a comment about a video on vimeo before, this is great. I really liked Baloon, which was simple and clever and so well executed. You have real musician's ear for music for visuals, I've just discovered Pinback... There is something very special about this video's opening shot. I'm not sure what it is, but its there. Makes me want to go out and buy a HVX. Or certainly upgrade my cameras. Colour treatment is awesome. While I'd agree it could be 30secs shorter, and have the same impact, I'm also sure if sony gave you $50K to spend, you could either hit that ball right out of the park or just tag a Bravia logo on the end and pocket the loot...
Not that I want rain on the parade, but but of curiousity what's the gig with use of music around here, regarding copyright? I notice no credits, licence?
