Sail is a bus-stop concept for the Sydney CBD. Anticipating the Sydney Opera House’s 50th Anniversary, the project proposes the construction of 8 bus-shelters in celebration of the event. Sail’s concrete, finger-like ribs, splay gently outwards over waiting communters.
Sail is by definition a generative algorithm and not any singular form. This flexibility allows
for form analysis, informal structural assessment and infinite design option studies.
The construction and refinement of the script
was much an exercise in understanding and abstracting the structural logic of the Utzon’s Opera House as it
was an exploration of deriving beauty from data. Jorn Utzon once stated “I achieved my aim, to have the structure expressing the architecture”, however in my digital context, perhaps this elegant notion can be rephrased; “data expressing the structure, expressing the architecture”.
