That will take a while, I'm afraid.

We plan to shoot during at least a year (and have just started ........).

Are we listening to audio picked up by the XHA1 built-in mic? Coz its got pretty good dynamic range reproduction even after Vimeo compression. Love your works!

Your comment proofs you're an audio professional allright .......... Fine ears.

No, this is not the XHA1 internal mic. It's a Sanken CS-1 mounted on another (=my) cam.

The A1 mic is not bad at all, BTW.

Thanks to headphones. :) But wow at 137dB SPL and an almost flat freq response that CS1 is some SonicBoom! Envious that you have several cams at your disposal.

I've acquired 2 nice mic's to partly solve my audio problems.

I'm well aware that a good mic alone can't do the job and that one needs professional skills to record fine audio. But with these 2 mics (the Sanken and a special Schoeps stereo) I manage to produce reasonable audio in about 75% of my shoots.

Wished I had your ears and skills though.

We've 2 cams. An XHA1 for my wife (also used on the trikes) and a heavy prof. JVC to impress clients ........ :)

Now I'm curious what audio interface you using in the field with those wonderful mics! If you ever need help with audio or maybe a (less impressive HD7 as) 3rd cam, just let me know. It might at the same time help me understand Dutch waterways better too!

Oh, en ik hebt geen trike maar een opafiets!
  • 2MAKEMOVIES 5 months ago
I use a Fostex FR-2. However, since a couple of months it does not work on batteries anymore. Only with an AC adapter. Since then, in the field, I use the audio part of my cam. I should have the Fostex repaired, because my cam is rather noisy and the limiter is far too slow (I get a better result with the mics connected to the XHA1.

We will probably do less classical music this year. We have a major job in Maastricht in February 2009 for the Hogeschool Zuyd (Conservatoire Maastricht) and maybe a similar job by the end of this year. I might well contact you -later on- to discuss the possibilities.

We now and then need a third "cameraman" or an audio guy. But first of all I hope to get support from the audio guys of the Conservatoire. However, this does not always help. As the following example shows:

In January audio guys from the Residentie Orkest in Den Haag placed their mics between the musicians and our cameras. They left no room to place our mics. And afterwards they did not deliver a prof soundtrack as promised. Leaving us a vid with a lousy in-cam mono sound (see: vimeo.com/851442 and vimeo.com/848197 ). Which is a pity, cause you don't often have the chance to record one of the best piano players alive.

Well, many people consider a trike to be an "opafiets" (untill they see us round a sharp corner at high speed and on two wheels .......... :) :)

    Hope you enjoyed lunch!

You know what, if you mail me those two separate recordings, I can try see if I can 'fix' the problem and restore it to 'acceptable' Stereo mode. There's movie magic, and there's also audio magic that might just work. No promises though. I'll let you have it back by tomorrow.

As for future recordings for concerts with your Schoeps the schoeps.de/E-2004/ums20.html should work well in ORTF and maybe one or two extra mics to augment the soloists.
  • 2MAKEMOVIES 5 months ago
We use the ORTF stereo MSTC 64U ( schoeps.de/D-2004/ortf-stereo.html ). Noys Boys in Amsterdam adviced it because of the easy placing. Our only extra mic is the Sanken (not willing to buy further mics right now).

Thanks for your offer. I dumped the files somewhere (cause I was a bit upset). Must find it, cut the right pieces etc. Can't do that today, I'm afraid. Could I send it this weekend or so? I'm in no hurry whatsoever (but would love to listen to the magic).

BTW, isn't such a file too big for email? Or must I compress it first? (the recording is in low quality -PCM 16 bit, 48kHz- as I wanted to use the tracks for synchronisation only).

You can mail it to my ftp.
When you find it, let me know and I'll send you details.
