This is my first attempt at editing my 5dmk2 footage with Final Cut Pro. This video was filmed whilst with no3 Coy, the Coldstream Guards in Helmand in December 2009 using the invaluable Z-finder and Mke400 mic. On assignment for The Daily Telegraph i have to primarily shoot stills , therefore i can't use any kind of shoulder rig, so this is the best option for me to quickly change from stills to video, but obviously your ability to steady shots and follow focus are hampered with this setup. But for reportage in the field it works for me.

WHAT shoulder rig DO YOU USE?
  • I don't use a shoulder rig at all at the moment, having the Zacuto Z-finder helps to stabilise my shooting as it adds another point of contact but would probably go with the a Zacuto model if i could afford it, as their follow focus system seems to be the best out there. With a gear system that sits flush on your lens focusing ring.

For on the fly, dirty, and cheap, you might want to consider a spider brace. It's made out of PVC pipe, cost about 50 quid, but for the price, you won't feel bad if it gets broken or you lose it. plus's light and can be broken down easily for packing or storage. But it will give you the shoulder support stability.

Excellent job. For a cheap lightweight shoulder rig try this - it really works for me vimeo.com/12488802

Great shooting! What lens did you use for this video?
  • I shot the vast majority of the film with the humble Canon 24-70 2.8L ...

Excellent job. Very much enjoyed the contrast from the normal whizz bang of so much from Afghanistan.

One of the first lessons of docu - get to know your subjects. These guys seem extremely comfortable and natural, even with your big camera pointed at them. A real credit to your craft.

PS sod the support kit - it looks fine!

Nice job. Did you use an IS lens and was the IS picked up by the mic?
  •
  • the video was shot using the Canon EF 24-70 2.8 L lens with no image stabiliser, but if you were buying a video specific zoom lens for video the Canon 24-105 IS would probably be a good idea, it's just not as bright...
