"It's a shame to only have dreams at night. You should have a few opportunities during the day." This wistful quote from Stephen Alesch speaks volumes about the spaces he and Robin Standefer create as architects and designers. Their firm Roman & Williams, is named for their grandparents, paying homage to another era. Together, they draw on the evocative moods, textures, and meaningful objects that linger somewhere between past and present. Their work is infused with memory and allows participants to connect with a more romantic and important time.

Alesch still renders all of their presentations by hand, a skill he has preserved and honed from an early age. Standefer evolved her skills as a painter into creating sets for the likes of Scorsese. As a team they have developed an approach to creating buildings and interiors that reveres craft and tradition, combined with a contemporary viewpoint. This unique vision has lead to a number of important public and private projects including the Ace Hotel, The Standard Hotel, and 211 Elizabeth. Photo by Rose Callahan

    This is just great!
I love this doc style... It lends itself so well to the subject matter and was masterfully excuted.
Also, I have to agree with everything Stephen and Robin say about space and architecture. There is such a lack of warmth in the current thinking of design.
    Well done

Great work! EX1 w/ Letus or DSLR?
    Music choices superb.

ex-1 with letus. i actually prefer it in most cases. the ace could have benefited from a dslr in the low-light situations.

ed has a great eye though and the noise isn't distracting to me.

This was great...makes me want to try documentary stuff. I had a questions. Do you think the 5D Mark II or a EX1 without an adapter would be a better purchase? I have a Mark II, but my friend was looking at the EX1 and I want to give him good advice since he cannot afford the adapter or lenses.

ed would be able to give a better answer, but from my experience it really depends on what he wants to do with it and how serious he is. for general doc shooting i think the ex1/ex3 is better workflow wise, but shooting with the stock lens?...well, i'll never go back to stock video lenses. i can't recommend that. i've done doc work with the 5d/7d, but ex1/ex3 always gives better results in the longrun. but yeah, the set up costs more. so if he can't or doesn't want to throw the money down, i'd say the 5d/7d is the way to go. but it's totally subjective.

yea one year later - i recommend the fs100 with a zacuto mount and a marshall monitor with nice lenses. it's an expensive game. the canon dslr line is not good in tungsten light - you get trapped in the color correct and the t2i and the 7d have noise and sharpness issues so any savings on that - you get hurt later down the road. overall it's just an expensive game to play. I joined the ratrace with the dvx100 stock lens. it wasn't until I threw the redrock 35mm m2 adapter did i start to figure things out - it really improved my shooting. still i guess for the price the t3i is the best - and just do what you can do - shoot and then eventually buy the better cameras. join the expensive game that I'm in :)

Top notch. Refreshing. The type of productions that look so easy... until you try it. A very high level of capture and editing. Every up and coming videographer, dp, producer and editor needs to see this series.
