With the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) this year, the Outreach and Enrollment team at the International Community Health Services dedicated innumerable efforts to mobilize the community around getting health coverage through the ACA. The combined energy and hard work of the staff at ICHS and our partner organizations created access to healthcare for a broad range of the community that never had that access before. During the open enrollment period from October 2013 to April 2014, ICHS reached over 14,000 people in the community and successfully enrolled more than 7,600 people into the ACA. In this story, they captured the struggles, challenges and accomplishments they experienced while reaching out to various communities about the different options of health care coverage. This team of In-Person Assisters, Advocates and Eligibility Workers at ICHS continue to serve as a key resource for community members who were not reached during open enrollment and those who still have questions regarding their new coverage.
