    Thanks for the comments guys!

It was made with a GLSL shader that uses the GPU to raytrace the fractal's mathematical surface - no polygons or models - it exists purely in mathematical space!

For more details about the maths and process see:

  • Oh my god is that a 3d Mandelbrot Fractal?

This must have taken forever to make
  • subBlue plus 1 year ago
Yes it's a Mandelbulb, which is a 3D version of the Mandelbrot fractal. See the link in my reply above for more background info.
  • Wow thats awesome

How long did this take to render?

Absolutely mind-altering; a real work of art at the meetingplace of technology and beauty. But, it's so frustrating not understanding how it was made. Please help me understand the technical workings!

Great stuff. I've just completed a piece: vimeo.com/10842872
using the mandlebulb fractal as an element, and i have to say you put me to shame! I was using it in AE and found that due to sheer processing i had no where near the control i needed. Cameras and so on were a nightmare. Perhaps i need to look at a more direct approach to this kind of visual, sadly i am lost with GLSL...
    Fantastic work, well done.

Great virtual 'camera' work which really adds to the mood along with the music. The changes at around 2:15 were a nice surprise. Thanks so much for sharing this.

Holy cow! That has got to be one of the coolest things I have ever seen! I would love to see your work in a dark theater on an IMAX screen. In fact, it's so mesmerizing that I would pay good money to sit through a hour(s) of that.

Maybe you are already producing "shows" somewhere? I don't know, but you should be. This is the first time I have ever heard about "fractals" and "Mandelboxes". I is nothing short of amazing. Great work. Bravo.

Oh, and your music selection is divine. The whole experience was like traveling through space and time. I didn't want it to end.
