Scooters for Hooters is an fund raising event for breast cancer in Orlando, Florida. Funds were raised through a scooter parade all around downtown, bands performing, artists’ exhibitions, raffles, open bars, etc.
My friends Robert Gilpin and Pat Williams got the link to the heads of the organization and produced the shoot: the deal was basically to film as much as possible; the editing wasn’t up to us, the organization is going to send all the footage to a post house and edit a much longer piece. We had five cameras running: my EX1, a Panasonic HVX200, two Canon XL2 and a Panasonic DVX100b. This is an extract of the stuff I shot: I had to film some extremely long interviews, which filled a LOT of space on my 2 SXS cards (8gb and 16gb) and left little room for the cool stuff. Oh how I wish I could shoot everything at 60fps!
I love the Letus Extreme! I had some experience with the Red Rock M2 and I hated it: immense light loss, flares all over the place and unstable fixtures. The Letus is great for fast guerilla gigs like this: almost no light loss, it’s extremely solid and delivers crystal clear pictures. Another thing that stands out is the peaking function of the EX1: it makes pulling focus easy! Even when you’re running around doing handheld.
The day went good: we got about 15 hours of footage, funds were raised, the people were happy and the Florida sun was breaking rocks.
I hope you enjoy the scooters… and the hooters.
The song is “Playground Love” from the film “The Virgin Suicides” and it’s performed by “Air”.
