Very cool man - nice rig... I'd like to see some more video you've taken with it flying around... Can make some sweet shots with that.

If I ever had one... I might put a cheaper and lighter T2i/550D on it... or maybe an even cheaper and lighter GoPro (:

Where did you buy the helicopter?
  • Luca,

It is a combination of helicopter parts and camera mounts. It cannot be just "bought" It has to be built. Contact me directly for more information.
  • Can you please send me a private message as well for pricing

great piece of kit. still wish the motion was a bit smoother. may i ask what lens is on? i'm guessing tokina 10-17mm could give nice results.
  • MS Tea,

The video is all raw, once a smoothcam filter is applied it looks stunning. Yes, it has the Tonika 11 -16mm
  • Jay Johnson 1 year ago
Hey Eric, great work on your DIY-camera-copter. Definitely Pro-Level work.

Since you built this rig yourself, how hard/expensive would it be to beef-up the engine enough to cary something like the RED camera?

It seems like your rig would benefit from the extra weight and significantly smooth out your shots. Right now it looks like the wind will knock it off the shot somewhat easily. But you're obviously doing a tremendous job correcting for that with your flying.

  • Tim Gillespie 1 year ago
I would think you should get into this as cheaply as possible to start with. You probably did too right? Maybe a cheaper helicopter to learn on first
  • Tim, Yes. I did learn to fly many years ago, and it does take at least a year to fly a helicopter well enough to add a camera.

The truth is that there is a whole lot too it. Much cheaper and quicker to hire a guy like me to come shoot for you and make your video project stand out.

    Take Care,
    Eric
  • Also what do you recommend i start doing now to learn to fly this mini helicopters now, so that i can train when i do make a proffesional purchase for a rig.
  • I would recommend :

Cheap : EFlite Blade 400 PNP
    Better : TREX 600 ESP
  •
  • This is RAD!! I can think of tons of shots that I could use this awesome rig at ha ha!! I suggest putting a lightweight gyro stabilizer on that thing and it would be rock solid shots! You can get em for around 1500 or so!

Align 700 TREX ? I though it was a gas power RC-copter ? you just used the body and mount electric motors on it ?
  • TREX 700 is a Nitro powered heli, I just converted it to Electric.

For the folks reading this who just want to take a shot at flying cheap RC helis, the Syma S107 is only about $30 on Ebay or Amazon and a lot of fun. I just got it for Christmas and it's easy to fly and very maneuverable.

But definitely won't carry any payload.

Have you crashed with the camera mounted? Did you ever consider wrapping the camera in lightweight protection? Even just a little might help minimize damage.

Nice video. I forwarded your information to my producer. We went to a demo from some guys who shoot video on R/C planes but they crashed in the first five minutes and required lots of room to take off/land.

You should correct your info in the video details. The 5D/7D shoots 1920x1080 at 24P or 30P. ;)

Amazing. You are going to get TONS of work. You deserve it, too, for all the time and money you must have put into building and learning to fly that rig well enough to keep your "L" series lenses out of the dirt.

I hope you're going to try the GoPro 3D with it. It would be even lighter, and then you'd really get a lot of work.

    vimeo.com/10957335

For that matter, if you wanted to go 3D you could probably fit two 550d's with EF 50mm 1.8's and end up about the same as a 5d with big glass.

Congratulations Eric, I've only dreamed of this, but YOU DID IT!

(btw): Everybody is out of the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 for Canon APS-c. You don't know where I could pick one up for the regular B&H price ($599.95) do you? (I just want it for ground use... honest.)
  • Craig,

Thanks for the comments. I have no idea about 3D, but will do what my customers ask of me.

There is 2 Tokina's sitting here in Austin at Precision Camera. @ 599.00

Eric, Will you help me/ build me to make one like this?

But My Camera will be upcoming Sony NEX5 Compact Camera because it's light weight and comes with AVCHD video (1080p).

Will the helicopter run longer and higher if the camera is light weight? This one will be useful to shot wild animals as well! :-) So I can avoid danger and expensive lens as well ;-)
  • Narada,

    Please see the comment above.

    Thanks,
    Eric

Great idea with the remote helicopter!

All I have to say is get to a Ski Resort or contact ski/snowboard film companies. Filming heli video is big but your Aerial camera would solve the issue of hiring expensive film crews and helicopters. It would open the door to allow more aerial footage that people may not have thought they would be able to get. I bet resorts would pay to have film shot so they could post it on there websites as well.

  • Great shots!!! I have two RC small helicopters that I fly for over 2 years...I think that people that want to buy one for professional use would be better off by hiring Eric´s services instead of trying to buy and fly one...A crashed helicopter with a 5D will be a hell of an expensive shoot...Not to mention that Eric is a great pilot. I can tell you by my own personal experience...

I will also chime in on the subject. I would think it would take years, maybe two to three to achieve this on your own. I have flown RC fixed and rotary wing for years. My first two heli met the earth in a beyond repair nature. ($2600.00 each) This even after approx 300 hrs of simulator time. One incident was my fault, the other mechanical failure. The learning curve is steep to say the least. A figure I have heard is that 80% of all Nitro RC heli's are crashed beyond repair or sold within the first six months.
If you need the shot, hire someone already in the biz. You will be much happier in the long run, as will your wallet.
