reddustfilm.net/ Video made March 2010

Music : Sigur Ros Hoppipolla

This a small reel shot on mostly 550D and a little bit of traditional camera for the music video.
It includes footage from 5 videos all mashed together.
Lenses : Sigma 30mm 1.4, Tamron 17 - 50 f2.8 VC,
Canon 50mm f1.8 and the kit lens.

Correction to end slate : I am not a DOP, just an aspiring one, I didn't really understand the meaning of the word before when I made this video.

are you a runner by any chance?
  • Dan O'Connell 1 year ago
just kidding, i read your quick bio ... awesome man, you should keep running. I'm a distance runner from the Boston area and actually gonna join the Hong Kong University XC team next semester. keep up the good work and seriously man, from what i've seen so far you have alot of natural talent ... work hard and you'll get far in the film industry. best of luck,

    DanO
  • I was an ok runner, I will keep running as it is in my blood. I am having motivation troubles at the moment but it will come. That's cool are you in China?

Thanks for the complement, I really do hope that I make it someday :)

HKU ... i friended you on flotrack haha. sometimes its the most difficult thing to keep up with when there's so much going on. i'm with you man - i look forward to more footage and one last thing, what's your take on the t2i? this fall i plan on traveling throughout southeast asia and have only been carrying my oldschool nikon 9 and D300 with some of my parent's pricey lenses (leica 180mm f/3.5). basically i have to give it back to them and need to purchase my own with a budget of about $1,000 which is going to kill me but worth it if i can get something worthwhile. i was thinking the t2i with the simple standard lens kit (18-55m) - any recommendations considering my pocketbook right now is about $600 but i'll be reaching as high as $1,000 - not a penny more!
  • Urrggg I have sunk a lot more money than 1k into my T2i..

with lenses and all the other stuff that is needed. The kit lens is not a great video / photo solution. I would get the body only and try to push your budget up a little more to afford one decent zoom lens instead of the kit. But if your stuck then it is a good start. Literally this camera is just value for money hands down. It is a fabulous camera I am so happy I have finally taken the DSLR video plunge. Are you wanting this for photo or video mainly?

a lot more for its remarkable video capabilities ... it's tough trying to decide what to do. the stock lens will produce some pretty decent shots for someone who is just entering into the DSLR world .. but i was thinking maybe getting the body and then purchasing the canon EF 50mm (knowing i have to sacrifice the wide angle option) or even go for the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6. any recommendations on lenses?
  • Ok well firstly video lenses are different from photo. You need something with image stabilization or use a tripod constantly unless you are comfortable with the slight annoying handheld shakes that are accentuated even further on non IS lenses..

Id rather have 18 on the low angle than 28mm but thats just me, less shake more angle. If budget is an issue to start just get the kit and upgrade later.

But the bad thing is that those zoom lenses gets darker as they zoom so for video you always have to keep that in mind.

The 50mm 1.8mm is a good start but a tough one to buy alone :(... I would get that and the kit, it is worth the extra $100.

My recommended lenses are Sigma 30mm 1.4 and Tamron 17 - 50 2.8 w/ VC but even these are pricey being the budget equivalents to the canon lenses which can fetch a pretty penny. I run my business around them so it was worth it otherwise I might not have gotten them straight away :)

    Francis,

Kyle here from Television Broadcast, year 1 at Conestoga. Your footage looks excellent man. Its a great inspiration for the kind of stuff I would like to do. I am very pleased to say that this reel brought shivers down my spine from how well it flowed with not only the music, but the other shots.

    Buenos Noches mi amigo,

    Kyle Lacelle
  • Thanks, appreciate it. Very good words to hear, its not everyday I get complement like that. It is a great song, ever since I saw the Disney Earth trailer I knew it would cut well with something. I'm in year two so shout me up anytime at school, if you want to know about DoP type stuff.

I loved the banana audio just randomly there. Of course, Sigur Ros is awesome and you did great editing the footage.

The quick focusing kind of distracts though.

    Great reel man!
  • Thanks for the input, I agree and I really want to sharpen it up soon with all of my "best" work soon.

    Hey Francis,

Thanks so much for posting your work, nice job! I'm looking at purchasing a setup similar to yours for music video work and wondered if you could post the entirety of the project you shot in the bar with the musicians? When I saw it interspersed in your reel I was really psyched! I really liked your shots and the lighting is close to what I'm expecting to be shooting with. Thanks and keep up the excellent work!
  • Thanks. So much Gabriel. Underneath my video is a link posted to my business site reddustfilm.net/ The Helix music video is on the homepage it has over 16,000 views in two months. It can also be seen at planethelix.com the band's website. That one wasn't shot on DSLR though... It was a very interesting experience to shoot, mostly unplanned and low budget. Would be happy to let you know how it was done anytime.

i think it looks great! colors, dof, framing, lighting etc. but i feel like the music KILLS it. such a bright video n music seems too slow. just my opinion. id like to hear something faster or just more aggressive. but music is so subjective maybe other ppl love it

I just bought the 550d, any suggests about using it for music videos?
  • Hi Otis. Im sorry I didnt see this message for some reason.

For music videos it is really amazing. I would put a prime lens on there and get your bokeh on!! and make use of that very large sensor size...

I cant really answer the question though, as you would need to be more specific.
