1. Beyond the Frame
As subjects within a visual culture, we are conditioned to read a photograph; we perceive it as a single moment captured in time and space, and consider it as whole within its four-edged border. We believe the photograph authenticates the existence of a certain being. As an image maker, I have always contemplated the notion of the frame and the experience of trying to capture a singular moment in order to create one photograph. This has led me to explore the artistic themes and techniques of Cubism, wherein the construction of pictorial forms breaks down three-dimensional objects into constituent angles to represent them as two-dimensional forms. I am also interested in exploring Chronophotography (sequential photography) – a technique which provides information about interval, duration, speed and other derivatives of space and time which help clarify our notions of time space, motion, duration, continuity and simultaneity. Overall the process did not favor a single image or perspective; it strived to destroy the notion of the frame and emphasize the process of construction.
