Speech for the Beneath the University -seminar in Minneapolis, April 9th 2010.

University reform in Finland, it's background, progress and current situation. We discuss what can be collectively done to overturn the disastrous effects that market driven, managerial reforms continuously impose on us and our communities. We end by collecting the themes we've discussed, and summarize some central issues we've learned through our struggle in Finland.

Puhe Beneath the University, the Commons-seminaariin Minneapoliksessa 9.4.2010.

Hi guys, I just saw your video trying to find things about Finland. If I'm not mistaken education is free in that country, but you say Aalto University will go private and charge? Those are really bad news :(
    Thanks for this video!

Hi, and thanks for liking our video! Historically, Finland has indeed been a proud example of free education that aims for equality, but the government and the leadership of the universities is aligning the Finnish education system more and more in line with the demands of OECD papers (see, for example: oecd.org/dataoecd/17/54/44651474.pdf) - with predictable consequences (eg. less quality research, worse working conditions, abandoning of fields of study in which the shortsighted investors aren't interested).

No fees yet in Aalto (as far as I know), and we intend to keep it that way through the collective efforts of students here - however, it is clear that leading politicians, the administration of the universities and the key players of economic life in Finland and Europe are in favor of tuition fees, and the structures for implementing them "as required" are already in place in Finland.
