April 21st, 2008 I took the ferry from Horseshoe Bay (North Vancouver) to Departure Bay (Nanaimo - Vancouver Island).

It was very windy out there on the water but the views were amazing.

I used the free Magic Bullet Movie Looks plug-in for color grading and I think it turned out quite good this time. Read / see this for more info on the plug-in: vimeo.com/1062707

why it wobbles at 5:00 ?
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 3 years ago
Extreme wind and a fully zoomed in camcorder is never a good mix. I've seen this before on other things I've done fully zoomed in - I think it might be the image stabilizer trying to fight the extreme conditions...

That's what we call "The Rolling Shutter Effect"

    More info on that: dvxuser.com/jason/CMOS-CCD/

If that's purely from the MB presets, then I'm impressed. Loved the saturation at 2:47.

The ferry left Horseshoe Bay at 9.30 in the morning, so the low sun helped a lot. I think I used a fast shutter speed too (maybe 1/1000th) that usually gives good results as well (if it's bright enough of course)...

Nice, but the pans are not always fluid? Do you own a fluid head tripod and using the rubber band trick, or you are using the same one as for photography?
  • [ PIXEL VIKING ] plus 3 years ago
It's a 'photography' tripod. I'll have to purchace a fluid head and rubber band later :)

Which fluid head do you recommend?
  • Eugenia Loli plus 3 years ago
Any that's meant for video and it specifically says that it's fluid, it should be fine when used with a rubber band.

Shame about the rolling shutter on these CMOS cameras, if there's mechanical vibrations, it wobbles or skews the image. Using a CCD at a high shutter speed solves that problem.

  • You did a terrific job of panning while at max zoom - smooth motion and level horizon. Those ferries pitch around a great deal. I live on Vancouver Island, so I know first hand how tough it is to get good video while onboard a ferry!
