Oceana presents an unprecedent list containing more than 400 European marine species that need urgent and effective protection. The international marine conservation organization and Caixa Catalunya Obra Social propose that they are included in the Habitats Directive, the European Union’s most important environmental legislative tool. Marine species are little known and because of this are barely protected by international agreements. Among those which have not yet been included in international agreements and are particularly fragile are the dusky grouper, the angelshark and brown algae, but the list must be continuously updated.
