According to the European Commission, 88% of the fish stocks evaluated in European waters are overexploited. Oceana’s recommendations for sustainable consumption are to avoid immature fish and species caught with bottom trawling, to buy local rather than imported fish and prefer catches from fishermen’s associations rather than those of the industrial processing vessels, and to refuse unlabeled fish.
