Sampling the Canon EF lenses in my bag to use with my camcorder, the Canon HV20 attached to a Letus Mini 35mm adapter.

In this video, I used the following lenses and I labeled them:

Canon EF 24 1.4
Canon EF 16-35 2.8 Mark II
Canon EF 50 1.2
Canon EF 85 1.2
Canon EF 135 2.0
Canon EF 200 1.8

If anything, this video kinda gives us some idea on the impact of different choice focal length on the same scene.

  • Hi Ronnie, how much do you zoom through the GG? Very nice, no vignetting! Would love to see your indoor test!
  • Ronnie Silos 2 years ago
Without the SLR lens attached, I just zoomed until all I saw was a nice clean ground glass. I definitely had room there and was very surprised that the 16mm setting handled fine without vignetting.

You have some very nice glass to play aroud with :)

Some of the shots looked soft, though. Do you find it hard to get sharp focus with that 2.7 inch screen?
  • Ronnie Silos 2 years ago
It's hit and miss. Definitely a challenge for sure. I just used the focus assist built in. I wanted to show the lenses opened wide, but if I close the aperture a bit, it is more forgiving and will be sharper as you aren't pushing the limits of the glass.

Ronnie, I have ordered a Letus Mini and am counting the days until its arrival. Until it does, I'll be living vicariously through you. Thanks for the great posts. Keep 'em coming!

Hey Sean! Good to hear from you again! Yours should be in soon eh?

My Letus Mini order was placed two weeks ago today. So far, after the initial order confirmation email, I've heard nothing but silence. I hate the wait! ;)

    Hi Ronnie,
How did you set your lense to f16???

Did you use your dslr and then put your lense on you Letus?
  • Ronnie Silos 2 years ago
    Hi Yanick. W
What I meant was the focal length was set to 16 since it was a 16-35 lens. But to answer how to set the aperture on an EF lens, yes, you do that by attaching to the slr, set it for Av prioprity, set the aperture you want, hit the preview button, then while holding it, detach the lens and it will retain the aperture setting.

Hi Ronnie, I just had to sign up after watching your vids. I've been thinking of getting a HV20+Letus rig and after seeing your vids, I'm convinced. Just one question, did you do any post production on the video(s)? I would really love to achieve the same look you have. Thanks and I'll be checking back for more of your videos. =)
  • Ronnie Silos 2 years ago
    Hi ichi,
For this test, I did not use any post. It was shot using 24p and used finalcut/compressor to do the 3/2 pulldown. Feel free to ask any more questions.

Can you plz describe your rod? is it from letus? and how long is it?
  • Ronnie Silos 2 years ago
I got my rails from B&H:
    bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...rt_System.html
Cavision RS-15IIM(250) Rod Support System - for Mini DV Camcorders, Heavy Duty

Perfect fit for my setup. Nice, compact, lite, and built well.

Ronnie - thanks for the inspiration Ronnie, I too have a huge collection of L series Canon EF lenses, and recently bought a Canon Vixia HF100 (37mm thread). I'm hoping that this camcorder would work similar to your HV20. Is there any magnification with the Letus mini adaptor? Is a 24mm really a 24mm? And, based on your writing, I'm assuming its best to only use EF lenses that allow for manual focus w/o power?
  • Ronnie Silos 1 year ago
Hi Tor. Your HF100 should do great. Even more compact! There is no magnification or crop factor. However, when you do zoom in to the ground glass to avoid vignetting, you will lose some. About EF lenses that do not have manual focus without power, it's up to you but it is a lot of trouble. Because you cannot manually focus, you then have to mount the lens onto an SLR just to get a focus set, then moving back and forth with the camcorder to fine tune the focus.

nice, may i know the Letus Mini need a Filp Module to correction?
  • Ronnie Silos 1 year ago
The Letus Mini already flips and corrects the image for you. This is one of it's strengths and still compact!

Great work Ronnie, what I wanted to know when you say the Letus Mini already flips and corrects the image for you. Are you saying that I will not see the image upside down when I look at the lcd.
  • Ronnie Silos 1 year ago
Yes. You are right. What you will see on the LCD is just the way you'd see it without the adapter. The image is already flipped back to normal so you can frame properly without having to do any hack or external monitor to flip.

Thanks Ronnie, guess what I will be getting next...thanks for the help. One other question, what would be the best lens to get for fast moving action.
  • Ronnie Silos 1 year ago
I forgot to hit the reply button but I replied to your last comment.
  •
  • Ronnie Silos 1 year ago
For fast action, you will need as wide openning on the aperture so a lens with 1.2, 1.4, 1.8, 2.0, 2.8 would work for you. For indoor fast action like Ice Hockey, which is mostly what I shoot, it's even more critical. Focal length depends on how far you are. When you say fast action, I'm not sure whereabouts you are. Most prime lenses offer faster lenses with wider apertures. I prefer them as I don't mind working for the shot. Besides, for videos, I will almost never use the zoom anyway. In general, people tend to get a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 lens first. Then at some point, you may decide to get 1 telephoto and 1 wide angle lens. If you have a specific application in mind, let me know and I'll be more specific with a recommendation.

Hi Ronnie! I am really inspired by your work. Just a question, can you zoom in and out in this setup or the focal length is fixed? I also have a sony DSLR can I use my 18-200 f3.5 from sony and tamron 17-50 f2.8 lenses on the letus 35 mini? Sorry for the questions I am really a novice here. Thanks and keep up the good work!
  • Ronnie Silos 1 year ago
Thanks docrjay. Yes, if you use a zoom lens, you can use that to zoom in and out.

great comparisons. i'm going to order my letus35 mini next week with an EF mount for my tilt shifts.

you mention EF lenses that won't focus without power, but i assume that refers only to MM lenses and not lenses with USM or Full-Time-Manual focus. There aren't many in the lineup(the 50mm 1.8 being a plentiful exception).

is it also safe to assume you are using your lenses wide open? You mentioned that stopping down allows for some margin of error in focus, but usually, you just "set it and forget it," right?
  •
  • Ronnie Silos 1 year ago
Yes, you pretty much use them wide open for the most part as that's what the dof adapter gives you. I now selectively use the adapter. There are cases where it's easier to not have the adapter when you want everything in focus anyway. Yes, there are very few odf these lenses where you need power to manually focus.

    hi ronnie i have canon fd 80-200mm f 3.5 and canon fd 35-70mm f 4 , can i use this lens with 35mm adapter?
is there any problem i should know using this kind of lens?
s it possible to have the full range of zoom and wide from the lens by using 35mm adapter?
  • Ronnie Silos 11 months ago
Those lenses are good. You can use them with adapters as long as you order the adapter with an fd mount. You should be able to use the entire zoom range also. These are actually ideal lenses to use as they are fully manual.

Great, I like that you labeled the lenses.

I have mostly seen video with music added in post, is the Letus noisy at all. I believe some of the other brands have pretty bad audio being picked up by the camera.
  • Ronnie Silos 6 months ago
NO. It's pretty quiet. If you put the setup on rods and keep everything nice and tight, hardly any vibrations and noise doesn't get picked up.

Just ordered the Letus Mini today.
I plan to handhold it with a mike in the shoe.
    At least for now.

I saw another video here (maybe it was a TwoNeil adapter) that had pretty loud humming.
