Well, it ended with a DNF (Did Not Finish) at just past 20K. The heat and lack of water at the aid stations were definitely a factor but my back problems were more of an issue (otherwise, if you're fit, you're fit and can deal with the heat if properly prepared and trained.) It was the best decision to bail at the Sears Tower b/c it was the shortest walk back to the race grounds and my gear. I knew I had limitations when I was at the starting line but because had raised money for the American Cancer Society as a Charity Runner, I felt I had to show up :) I knew going in that I wouldn't have a PR (Personal Record), so I didn't beat myself up (or the Chicago Marathon organizers) for not finishing.

I'm currently training for my 2008 re-do! This year, I intend on finishing, despite my ongoing back problems. I want to run the entire marathon but I'll most likely do it as an 8/1 run-walk. My coach has qualified for 4 Boston Marathons doing a run/walk program and swears by it. We shall see...

after running 21 miles, i found it harder to walk when they forced us to walk. even people walking were dropping like flies. they were just cramping up and dropping.

this was another great video wendy. it truly depicts exactly what went on that day. it was total f**king chaos.

i'm glad i made we made it out of there.

just out of interest what is your PR? (we call it PB over here), as the previous comment read it looked chaotic at the end. All the best for next year! I have a friend who did the same race from the UK and he, and his mate, both recorded a DNF (a first for them both) so don't let it get you down...

    Hi Rich,

My personal best in the marathon is 4:49:10 but since it was back in 1984 and the only marathon I've completed, I guess I can't really consider it a PR. My PR in the half marathon (my favorite distance) is 1:58:08. That was in my second HM and I shaved 17 min. off my previous HM time. My normal training pace during long runs is about a 9:30 and my race pace (when healthy) is between 8:30-9:00. Am hoping to fix my back so I can do some speedwork to improve my times but right now, I'm just happy to be able to run at all!
