Herman Rhys was a film made from September to November 2007 during our 'rogue' college years. The project was filmed by myself, Callum Baker and Mark Turney for our Single Camera Drama assignment and was the second of which to earn distinction level. The film stars Ben Jenkins who portrays Michael Gonzales a late teen obsessed with 'Action Man' figures who's life takes a turn for the worst after he participates in a free online personality test. William Dowle co-stars as a multi religion book salesman with Simon Haines as the C.E.O of Perseplex, the company behind the personality test. Emily Fox cameos as Barbie, yeah!
Ultimately (in our eyes) a successful project; the film wasn't without it's problems. Two of three actors dropped out days before shooting was to begin along with a botched up first attempt with the fireworks scene, technology, daylight and time were also against us. We came to the conclusion that the film was cursed, we therefore decided to blame it on a fictitious gentleman named Herman Rhys giving the film its title.
It surprised us at the time that the film was highly marked and given distinction. Out of all of our projects Herman Rhys is probably the most commonly referenced and noted and was considered the 'Magnum Opus' of the college projects. Callum, Mark and I frequently differ our opinion of it, not being overly fond of it at one point and then other times we will state that "it's not that bad." Depends what mood we're in.
