I would be very interested to know how much of that was just premiere CS3, how much was Magic Bullet Looks and how much was in camera? I am trying to learn how to do this with CS3 myself and so far havent gotten anywhere near what I saw in your video. As others have asked, if you could do a slower video with a descriptive narration of what you are doing it would be really appreciated!

Tutorial to come. One thing to remember is to NEVER use the in-camera profiles or scene files to alter the picture. Do it 100% in post. EX: With the HVX200, leave the scene files set at factory zero. With the 5d, use the Eugenia gamma curve profile or superflat. Or just use Nuetral with the contrast, sharpness, saturation, and hue turned to zero.

    From my blog:
Leaving the camera with the flattest image might not look all that great right out of the camera, but it records the MOST INFORMATION to the camera for best lattitude in post grading and giving you the most options to choose from when the color grading process starts. Otherwise, for example, if you choose to alter the camera settings to crush the blacks or over-saturate the colors…you will NOT be able to brighten up those shadows or decrease the over-saturation in post and make it look decent.

I look forward to seeing it!

I am working up a descriptive tutorial on color grading. I will post on my blog as soon as it's ready. crookedpathfilms.com/blog

Thanks for the explanation above. I like to do everything in camera, but am now going to give your ideas a go. Your grading is very cool.
  •
  • You have some really impressive work here! Some of the grades are really distracting/overdone, in my opinion. Though they would need to be viewed in context to be able to judge. Good work!

It's no fun to show off the lower key grades I've done, haha. Thanks for the kudos though...much appreciated!

Fab color grading.. Wondering how you layered all the corrects.. adding lighting spots, volumetric lights, vignetting etc. did you use masking tools in premiere or is it all in the magic bullet?
  • Crooked Path Films plus 1 year ago
Thanks! Most of it was Magic Bullet with some track mattes and also creative animation of photoshop mattes for the shadows and lightbeams. I didn't use after effects once. I love AE for some things...it's at time necessary...but many people don't realize what one can do in Premiere.

I wasn't sure what color grading was before I watched this. Wow. Magic.
  •
  • That is some really nice color grading. It is incredible to see how much the ambiance of the clip is modified by simply grading it differently. Specially like the clip of the guy writing next to the window as well as the singer. It is quite sure that a short tutorial would be highly appreciated!

Impressive! Best example for cc in post on vimeo, I´ve seen until now! Thank´s for sharing! I "only" have PS14 w MBL. Could You imagine, that a similar cc is possible with my software?
  • Crooked Path Films plus 1 year ago
I don't know what PS14 is, but MBL (Magic Bullet Looks) is my preferred coloring software.
  •
  • Steffen K 1 year ago
I meant Pinnacle Studio 14 Ultimate Collection with MBL. So the concept seems to be the same, even though "my" MBL has no possibility for keyframing,(e.g. the spotlights).
  • Crooked Path Films plus 1 year ago
If by keyframing you mean animating the spotlights...I did not do that. You can't animate the individual components in MBL. I just used other techniques. There are many other elements involved, such as photoshop layers and track mattes.
  •
  • Steffen K 1 year ago
Yes Sir, I meant this. Thank You! I apprehended, that MBL is´t able to do it alone, yes. I will study track mattes and layers in Photoshop a little, in future. Didn´t consider these tools until now. It´s interesting.

  • Paul Hamilton plus 1 year ago
Hey Crooked - this is a wicked cool demo video! I immediately recognized your raw footage as a superflat profile... I have been using Marvels Cine, a superflat profile... will your profile also work with the 7D? Thanks for posting this helpful video!
    Cheers, Paul in Chicago
  • Crooked Path Films plus 1 year ago
Thanks Paul. I believe it will work fine on the 7d, yes. I've tested most of them out including Marvels, and mine's the best. Marvel's curve is too flat in the midrange which consequently causes skintones to look muddy and actually losing detail. One thing to remember is to switch to a profile that closely matches your intended graded final image for lighting and setting exposure, then switch back to the flat profile just before rolling. Otherwise you'll underexpose.
  • Paul Hamilton plus 1 year ago
Hey Crooked - I am following up with this thread - I hope you are still around. It's taken me this long to understand fully what superflat is. I am now getting what you said about using a profile for setting exposure - then switching to superflat to shoot. I've had to shoot in superflat enough to understand what it looks like. What you said about underexposing is interesting... it's strange because I have been "overexposing" just a wee (in my judgement), and shooting identical clips with my preference of slightly underexposed. So no I understand what you are taking about here, cheers and thanks, Paul

  • Crooked Path Films plus 1 year ago
I shot with my flat picture file and then color each clip after the edit was locked.

If anyone is interested I did a podcast with Richard about this video here:

  • Tommy Reed 1 year ago
It would make sense to see a much wider range of color correction in a demo. Almost every shot has the 'darks' literally crushed and the overall image does look digitally enhanced. It definitely takes a step away from achieving a true 'film' like image.
  • Crooked Path Films plus 10 months ago
There's a million combinations you can do. Usually if I want the film look, however, I shoot on film. I don't try to make my video look like film...seems pointless to me. I grade what looks good to me, but it's very subjective. Thanks for watching!
  • Greg Conners 9 months ago
There's at least a million combo's, and what we do is completely subjective. For every look you create some will love it and some won't and everyone seems to have their own opinion on what constitutes the "film look". I see vignette's on a number of your videos, but from what I've seen you don't grade every video with this contrasty moody look, it looks cool on this piece, good job!

Thank you for this demonstration Richard! I am using an HMC150.. I should restore the settings to factory standard for best grading results following your HVX200 lead.. up until now I've had limited success using MBL with my altered scene file settings.. now I know why!
It looks like you add a slight layer of Gray before grading. does this help in grading? such a in a beyered image?
  • Crooked Path Films plus 10 months ago
No grey layer..not sure where you're seeing that. Thanks for the nice words.

Loved the video. Have been color grading with synthetic aperture in AE. Just got MBL and intend using it more. I'd love to know more about using the track mattes. Did you use a few layers (or video tracks in premiere), and use MBL on each of them?

A1 stuff!!! Absolutely inspiring. I've just bought Magic Bullet Looks and I'm currently going through the tutorials on Red Giant's page, but this is the best "demo" I've seen so far.

The best part is that, after watching your stuff and putting it together with what I've learned so far, I think I have a pretty good idea of how to at least "start out". I'll see. Hopefully, some day, I'll be doing color grading at least half as impressive as yours. I take my baseball cap off. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

P.S.: BTW, your Blog is extraordinary. I got here from there.
