I enjoyed just about everything about “Date Night” except for the script, which meandered and was way too predictable in places.
Steve Carell and Tina Fey, funny as always, brought their “A” game to this comedy/action flick, playing a worn-out married couple desperately needing a break and also a little extra spark in their marriage. There’s a case of mistaken identities, and all sorts of mayhem breaks out.
Mark Wahlberg- shirtless through the film in a running bit, and likeable loser James Franco were very enjoyable in their supporting roles. The plot is a throwaway, but most of the movie still works because of the talent of Carell and Fey, especially when they are left to improvise. But anytime the film gets too plot heavy, which is fairly often, the momentum screeches to a halt. Some original action scenes and several good chuckles almost make this movie a “Get To The Theatre”--but not quite.
I’d like to see Carell and Fey team up again-but next time in a better movie. “Date Night”, directed by Shawn Levy, from the Night at the Museum films, gets a grade of
“B-”. I’m Keith Kelly.
