Sony unveiled a new prototype for a small digital cinema camera at their NAB 2010 press conference. The camera is scheduled to be released at next year's NAB.

Oh snap! A shot across the bow of RED!

Wait... I'm confused. Is it 35mm or digital?
  • John Lewis plus 1 year ago
    It's digital with a 35mm sized sensor.

This is a pretty big deal. I'm a 7D shooter with aspirations of a scarlet. Perhaps I'm now a 7D shooter with a Sony as my next step. C'mon Canon, you've already got your feet wet, just jump in the deep end already!

Now this is the BIG fight between this cam and Panasonic AF100.

I just want a camera to shoot 100Mps native Quicktime files in 4:4:4 with a 35mm size sensor the size of a Ex3 with interchangeable PL mount or still lenses for under 5k.

Is it tooo much to ask?
  • Anthony Cloutier 1 year ago
This is exactly what I am asking for ! Oh and you forgot 5k for 5k$ ;)and also the package would include a "redrocket" like card for free .

They'll probably make one and leave out something like the ability to record audio or make it only 30p....haha.

  • Question for my peers: with Sony's new 35mm sensor and Panasonics 4/3" sensor cameras announced are people going to skip over Scarlet and go to the big boys ? I've had plans on buying a camera on hold for almost a year waiting for the SCARLET...finally caving in and buying the 7D...that could tide me over until Sony's camera became available...and probably will unless SCARLET gets a definite ship date.

"Without the need for never-ending firmware upgrades or workflow issues", yeah, yeah, well they had to stretch far to slap Canon with that. The 5D mkII is already 2 years on the scene while the Sony's apparently still a year away. I'll wait and see.

We are witnessing the beginnings of a HUGE move to this type of camera. Once the big boys like Panasonic and Sony (and soon Canon, JVC, etc) start going and competing with each other, look out RED.

We all knew this day was coming. RED is good but will (un)fortunately die.

Panasonic has already given us a price range of about 6000 for their camera. Sony will have to try and do the same! Canon will have that price edge over Sony and Panasonic with their 7D and 5D...So I guess what I'm trying to say to the big boys is...Keep these cameras around 6000-8000 range!!!

    which codec used?
    which support registration?
single sensor, but with full HD resolution or greater (2K, 4K)?
price for all or only for Fellini ...?

It is not clear in this video except the wrong side of the display position
  •
  • will it cost less than 10,000usd and shoot 3k +; what will the dynamic range be? Will it come close to replacing film?
  •
  • Oh its on! Panasonic, now Sony. Red Scarlet is going to wake up to a crowd of competitors if/when it released. I don't think this sony will shoot anything more than 1080p.

*prototype* being the key word here

May never see the light of day just like that stupid looking 4k Canon

This camera is exciting news. So far the only competitor is Panasonic. It seems to me that the Scarlet will never be produced; at-least not for the same price range and features as originally advertised. I am tired of waiting for a Scarlet. The 7D and AF100 are both PAL/NTSC switchable, and my decision will probably be with the AF100. Not enough info about the new Sony yet, to justify waiting longer. I just wish the AF100 had stabilizers in the body. Would be good for run 'n gun. Also hope BBC accept AF100 footage for broadcast.

I have to disagree on RED being out of the competition. They are slow on production models but I'd be surprised if the Sony 35mm digital camera will do 120fps at 3K or better or will have ramping as a camera feature. RED is still very much in the game. I suspect when Sony says it's an affordable camera ... they mean sub- $20,000.

Ag Af100 can do 60fps at full HD from what I hear. A bit strange that this camera can't match that.
