1. Waiting for the End of the World
Deprived of human contact, and with only an overactive imagination to keep him company, Petr sets about his monotonous night shift at his local supermarket.

Shot on 5D mk II, with 135mm and 17-40mm lenses. Edited on FCP.

Glastonbury 2010, Encounters Film Festival, Exposures Festival (winner - 'Best Artists Film'), Artsfest 09, Kino 10, A Wall is a Screen, Clermont Ferrand short film marketplace, Souvenirs From Earth.

Great film! I worked nights in a supermarket for 5 years so I can kind of relate to this one.
  • Lee Deaville 1 year ago
Thanks Mark, I worked evening and nightshifts for three years in a supermarket - which allowed a great deal of research and pre-production.

superb DP work and direction. May I ask about your light kit on this film. Well done mate.
  • Lee Deaville 1 year ago
    Thanks Rick.

We used a couple of 300w's for the darker parts of the store, but we generally let the tungsten lights do the work.

surely the story is in that he has nothing to do at work?
  • Anthony S 1 year ago
I was wondering what the point was myself. I also think the voiceover duplicated what we were seeing on screen, so it was less effective. We see the tv is not working, then we get told it isn't working. If you want to make a point the TV doesn't work, tap the side of it. The voiceover could have taken us deeper into what the character thought or felt. Good job on creating! Making art is hard.
  • Jack Tew 1 year ago
Kamau, if your going to push people into becoming better filmmakers maybe give them constructive criticism from a master such as yourself!? Or maybe abit of advice how they could of improved it!? I dont see how you saying "wheres the story at" going to inspire and push people to create better films????? Or is that me looking at it the wrong way?
  • Lee Deaville 1 year ago
Well, the film has been contentious, which is always a plus.

I guess that the story is a kind of 'anti-story'. The lack of a story, or a narrative for this character; his life is so cyclical and repetitive that it has no beginning, middle or end.

The protagonist invites us into his very personal space. He commentates on what he finds interesting, or unusual, unaware of what interests the audience. Remember that he's simply trying to stimulate his mind, attempting to stave off the boredom.

Yet the job is his salvation, without it, he wouldn't be who he is.
  • Well, the point was to show that it has no beginning or an end, so I think that explain that who he is. I wouldn't really be interested on how he get the job or why does he need the job because the story is that his life is just repetitive and that's all. And I think the voiceover explaining what he do pretty much tell us why his job is his salvation.

  • Great stuff! I loved peering in the parallel reality of nightshift workers, almost a sort of documentary feel to it, and eshetically suberb, thnx for sharing!
Have you worked nightshifts in a supermarket yourself? Or did you first come up with the story and then found a store that wanted to cooperate?
Have to agree with Anthony (above) that the VO was duplicating now and then, otherwise good stuff!

Hate the fact that people think this film is 'simple'. It's very complex & I think you won't appreciate it as much if you've never worked the night shift. Rarely seeing the day light sleeping until it's time for work again. Nothing to do at work, no one to talk to. Wow I hate the graveyard shift. :/

Can I ask how you managed to get a grocery store for a short film?
  • Lee Deaville 1 year ago
    Thanks Gustavo.

I think the film strikes a chord with those who have experienced the enigma of the nightshift.

I had to seek permission from managers, area managers and media departments, who allowed me to use the store under a number of conditions (no documentaries, no company logos, etc).

You don't find many supermarkets like these nowadays, it was the biggest and most advanced in Europe 30 years ago.

I loved this. The shots were beautifully composed. And the comedy element of him sitting or laying in certain places, counting down made me laugh. It's a shame the final count down wasn't something more imaginative than just holding a box.
But I loved it. I take it Tescos didn't mind either :-)
  • Lee Deaville 1 year ago
    Thanks Simon.

I guess the film is about Petr's lack of imagination, and his futile attempts to dream beyond the store.

Tesco were great. I had to seek permission from the powers that be, but they couldn't have been more helpful. Of course, it helped that I had worked there for 3 years!

'Anti Story' totally works for me. It's what I'm drawn to.

Really nice work. I particularly liked the "...3..2..1..." - like every shift, 'knock off time' is his focus.

I like this short, it has a lot of character. Really liked the clocking-out cut to waking up alarm. I thought that worked very well, it said so much in a simple, quick way.

  • Dave Humphreys 1 year ago

  • Rowan Johnson 1 year ago
Despite getting a conditional offer, I'm going elsewhere because I'll have family nearby, which will no doubt be a help when on a student budget. It definitely looked good there, though. I seem to remember putting it as my insurance choice.
  • Dave Humphreys 1 year ago
oh ok, where are you going to then?
  • Dave Humphreys 1 year ago

I'm going to Southampton Solent University instead. There wasn't really a lot in it between all my choices, though. But I've got family near there so that was the deciding factor, really.
Also enjoyed the short - quite funny and very charming. I love how the sound is really clear. That's one thing I've struggled to do with my own productions so far, but I guess there's a certain technique for it.

Really engaging, and haunting. Once I clicked play, I was spellbound. The shot of the fluorescent lights reflected in the two plastic bottles at 03:02 was a wonderful abstract moment. Great compositions throughout. Great storytelling concept. I even loved the credit roll. Thanks. Fine Art.

Wow I loved it… thanks… I keep asking my self, “how did they get authorization to film inside this store… or did they???
  • Lee Deaville 1 year ago
    Thanks Durban.

I had worked part-time for the company for 3 years, and had to put in a special request to film in the store.

It was either this store, or bust. It's 30 years old, and possesses this character that just doesn't exist in modern supermarkets.

The premise is fairly similar to that of the short film "Cashback", but I love the twist you guys put on this.
  • Lee Deaville 1 year ago
I have read about 'Cashback', but never seen it. Doesn't the character have time-stopping abilities?

Our budget didn't quite stretch that far, so we had to make do!

I see people already talked about what I'm about to talk. But I would like to point it out once more. There's no story in this short movie, even though it's been shot with great enthusiasm and precision. I can give you a tip on how to be sure if you have a story or not in your hands. At the start of your scenario, take a not of what your character's situation is. Is he depressed, is he happy? And at the end of your scenario, do that again. Compare the two situations. If they're the same, you don't have a story. You see, in cinema (it doesn't matter the film is short or long) we want to see characters that makes a difference in their lives. This can be a BIG difference like becoming rich and wealthy through illegal solutions (of course to give this story a little depth the character might also lose his morality along the way). Or it could be something like dropping his daily schedule and going for a drive countryside to discover himself while he's getting into trouble unwillingly. But you have to put your characters through a tough situation and at the end they have to be changed a little bit. Please keep up the good work.
  • Ozgun Kabakcioglu 1 year ago
But of course, there's a lot of work out there that does not have a character development. Even though they're sometimes fun to watch because of their settings, it is my opinion that they are also the ones that most easily forgotten. These "non-plot" movies are often praised, so there are a lot of people who likes them. It's just a matter of opinion and personal taste really.
