1. Sixteen[:-)] - Bolex H16 test/short film - 16mm
3 years ago
Diary of a 16mm test/short

Monday (26/05/08) evening: film the short
Tuesday: rest
Wednesday: give film to the lab
Thursday: pick up processed/telecine'd film from lab
Friday: edit
Saturday: upload to Vimeo

This is the first thing i have shot on 16mm, it was shot on a Bolex H16 which i was testing out for my old University, which recently acquired 3 H16's. i wanted to shoot something other than just someone holding a clapper board (see my super8 test) so i wrote a 2 minute script one sunny afternoon a couple of weeks ago.

this is a very quick edit, and i had to drop the quality considerably (by two thirds :-() to get it online. i will probably remove the song and dub the whole thing eventually.

hope you like...

:-)

What a fun and sweet film I have owned two Bolex'es through the years. One was a Super 8 I still own but have not filmed with for many years. BTW, very well edited also! Great music which fit perfect. Loved it. :o)
PS Wish I could have saved it.

thanks, it was fun to film too, we only did two takes (max) of any shot we did, (because of money constraints obviously) so it made editing a breeze, did it all in about 3 hours.

I have an H16 and a 150 super. I have not used the H16 yet but after seeing this I am very much inspired. Loved it!

    Really nice stuff.
I don't know much about shooting 16 either. Is it all just the existing lights on the tube, shot on tungsten? The colour looks so light and clean!
  • anthony gurner 3 years ago
yeah i didnt use any additional lighting on the tube. i used fujifilm 500t thats why its bright.

I keep returning to this short film time and time again. Very well done. The Fuji stock looks great. Do you like working with the Fuji as opposed to what Kodak has to offer?

It's really great to see someone actually use a Bolex for something! So much of the Bolex footage on Vimeo is, like, handheld, out of focus, improperly exposed stuff labeled "Camera Test." I was becoming disheartened! So anyway, excellent job, it looks beautiful.

Do you remember what lenses you used?
  • anthony gurner 2 years ago
    Why thank you.

hmm, lenses, i don't really. they were both really wide, like a 9mm, and a 18, or something, as they were the only lenses the school let me have. and they were just the standard c-mount primes you get for a bolex.

i just shot on an SR3 for the first time last week, on black and white stock for the first time also. and saw the results yesterday. very nice they were too.

This is the short that made me buy a 16mm camera instead of a digital one... Love it!
